F4U-5 NAS Glenview ever make it to Grey over White Scheme?

Mon Sep 16, 2013 10:13 am

Hi guys,
I was just thinking the other day ...ouch... but I was wondering if NAS Glenview kept their corsairs long enough to make it to the Grey over White Scheme?

Good question but I don't believe so, I haven't seen any in that scheme from Glenview, of course I could be wrong (again!) ... The photos below are all NAS Glenview Corsairs c 1951

I guess my next logical question would be, where there any other Corsairs that survived up to the Grey over White Scheme other than Seattle's and Olathe's F4U-4s and the Marines AU-1 Corsairs? I know some Navy AU-1 Corsairs did, but I don't think they were ever given to any squadrons. I've seen a pic with a few of them lined up with what looks like a fresh coat of paint, but no specific markings other than BuNo. #'s.

F4U-4 Folks /JR14:

Good day!

There were several gull-grey scheme F4U-5 Corsairs that went to the Argentine Navy c. 1957. 2-A-222 was one of them. At least 4 FG-1Ds were also El Salvador bound (FAS) c. 1957. Buno 67070 being one of them. The B/W pic included here is another one-of-a kind scheme shown on a F4U-5N that served in the Navy as a test bed at one time.c. 1955. Buno 124493 x FAH 608. The actual colors are yellow & dark blue. Photo via Navy Archives.

p.s If you happen to have that pic of the No-Markings gull-grey F4U plz post it. Sounds interesting!!

Looks like they were straight from overhaul. I guess these were eventually given to the Marines at Quantico.

Was this an ex-Argentine Corsair that made it back to the States?

They went to that paint scheme I believe in 1957, same year the corsair was retired. Some was applied and the others simply didn't get it before retirement
