Interesting thread! I guess it's time for maybe a dedicated Liaison photo thread. I have a bunch of cool stuff if interested.

What's great about "L-Birds" is they're still reasonably affordable (except the O-1..they do want a good bit of money for them...considering what they are i.e. two seat Cessna 170s more or less). They're a great way to remember the past.

So why would a Japanese L-19 have rockets? Trying to sneak up on Godzilla?

The WWII & Korean War L-4s and L-5s had field mods as mentioned above. Most were standard bazooka's mounted on the struts. And yes, side arms abounded. The last air to air kill over Germany was when an L-4 shot down a Storch with a .45 M-1911.

I too am somewhat biased. Would love to see anything L Bird related. Bonus for any L 4 pics from March Field circa 48 / 49.

So we know multiple L-4s and some L-5s were equipped with rockets, but I personally haven't seen any evidence of L-16s with such. Don't think as much improvisation took place in Korea as it was quite a different theater for the use of L-birds. There's a good book on the subject that is pretty expensive if / when you can find it. Will post the name if I can remember it.
