Liberator in India

Does anyone know what condition the interior of the B-24 at the Indian Air Force Museum is in? Is this airplane, serial number 44-44213 really the last known complete B-24 in India? Is there any conformation of a B-24 stored in China? Photos would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I visited the Indian Air Force Museum at Palem Air Force Base back in 2005.

Given the brutal summer heat ~ all openings are covered with what appears to be sheet metal.

I've no idea what the interior is like I'm afraid ....... :wink:

Is this the last B-24 in India ? I think the answer is yes.

During my visits I tried to follow up on the story about a high ranking air force officer who had one parked in a hangar as his retirement plan.
The legend has it that he passed away ~ the aircraft was left where it was and is still there. I thought I has a good lead on it's whereabouts
and asked for a picture to be taken which included a copy of that days newspaper. I never got further than that ~ despite several prompts.

The airfield in question is still in use and it's in a restricted area ~ so it's impossible to follow up on the story.

There was an interested party is the US who was willing to fund retrieving it ~ which would have been a bureaucratic nightmare ~ but it was not to be !

I've been reading Peter Vacher's book on how he rescued Hurricane R4118 from a Tech school in India. Needless to say it took something like 15 years to get it out due to all the bureaucratic red tape bull$hit that tied up the system. I'll remain hopeful that there is an extra B-24 (or four!) still in India and maybe we'll see them returned to the US or wherever and restored accordingly.

looks as if she's ready to shrivel up. a real shame. i have 1 of talichette's b-24 pilot seats from my 1st wife...... other than my kids, probably the best thing she ever gave me. i had a local canvas guy re - do it, turned out great. however.... i can't believe i can hardly get my 168 lb size 32 tushy into the seat. people were really of smaller stature barely 70 years ago.

I dont think the plexiglass has been covered in sheet metal over.. just sprayed silver..?

I saw part of a B-24 wing in China, but not much else B-24 related. I kind of doubt China has anything secreted away like that. They are much too practical.

Yes, from around four years ago and they aren't in that location any more. I have no idea where it ended up. the wing had one end sawed off, so it wasn't intact either.

that Alaskan 24 looks fabulous!! looks like somebody just polished her. i'm no wreckspert, but it doesn't look like a difficult recovery compared to others I've seen!!
