Hey folks, was curious if anyone out there happened to have any detailed drawings from any of the Lancaster manuals depicking the inner workings of the Lanc's tail wheel assembly (strut). We've looked through everything we have and have been unable to find much info about it.

We've started the removal of the assembly and would like to find out more info to decide our next step in the process of getting it repaired.

Hi Ryan:

The details of the tailwheel strut can be found in the Dowty hydraulics manual for the Lancaster. Sadly, like everything else, it is locked away, or I could get you a copy of what you need. As I recall, it is incredibly complicated inside, despite how simple it appears from the outside. You may want to consult with Messier Dowty, if they still have any info on it.

If you post your request over on the Flypast forum either for a copy of thh Dowty publication or the appropriate AP, you'll probably have what you need within a few minutes.

My understanding is the Lancaster and Lincoln tail wheel assembly are one and the same.

I know that they used to have a problem with shimmy and you would be well advised to find a copy of the modified version.

Hey Windsor

First, I would try Canadian Warplane Heritage, they have to have the info they're flying one.

Second, The Bomber Command Museum of Canada in Nanton Alberta...great people and have an amazing archives.Talk to David Birell (no promise on the spelling)

Their Lancaster should be running engine number 4 anytime now!

Third, I would contact the Ventura Memorial Flight Association...Tony specifically.
Tony and the guys seem to have access to seemingly impossible manuals and I know they have the York ones and I believe York and Lanc are the same.

Fourth, Contact me! We have a complete Lancaster tail wheel assembly and if it would help you out I could talk to the Board about giving it to you. No promises but possible.

Hey Tom,

Thanks for the info. We've spoken to CWH, they replaced theirs with a Shackleton tail wheel assembly and are using a Cessna Caravan main wheel along with it.

I'll send you a message and we can discuss the tail wheel you guys have, that sure would be great to be able to use an original one rather than converting to a Shack one like CWH did. We've started looking into ours and so far it's not looking to be in the best of shape.
