I'm pretty certain the gull gray over white F4U-5N is F4U-5N, BuNo.122189 which was pulled from surplus storage by the US Navy and set aside for preservation. It was later traded to the USMC Museum for an FG-1D and is now on outdoor display (unfortunately) at MCAS Miramar in California.

Good day!

Interesting pic of the gull grey Corsair! It looks similar to Buno F4U-5N 122189 except for the RDF antenna in the back. Could it be an F4U-5NL instead??

BuNo.122189 had the RDF antenna prior to being refurbished by the Marine Corps Museum. I figure it was just a retrofit made during the plane's later service years.

Plz keep posting those rare F4U pictures. The gull grey F4U-5N may be Buno 122189 as Rob says, still in its original scheme. c.1970s. Somewhere in a NAVY/MCAS base.

Maybe the Miramar MCAS folks may come up with other angles when they received this fine sample! This one looks likes it's being refurbished. Tks

Found some more info/data on the fine B/w of poss Buno 122189.

1. ... C. '65-'76 at Pensacola NAS. (maybe someone else took pics of it then.)

2. In storage at NTS Bainbridge, GA c.'78

3. Restored at MCAS Cherry PT late 70s.

4. Used the scheme of an F4U-5P WF #15. Korean Era.

5. Transfered to Miramar MCAS c. 2000??

If the gull grey sample is indeed Buno 122189 then it should be holes where the metal plate for the RDF antenna used to be mounted or another plate to cover the area. Same with the triangular antenna in front of it...that one, was also removed & replaced with another type.

p.s it will be nice to see a close-ups of these 2 areas!!

That, or they simply replaced the sheet metal. I have a old photo of 122189 at Pensacola in 1974 with the RDF installed, if that's the question.

Those RDF mods seem interesting! The ARG F4U-5Ns had blue & silver footballs installed also.

Is the Buno visible in the c.1974 Pensacola NAS pic?? How about the VHF antenna behind the cockpit?

Believe the last picture of 189 was taken at Whitting Field, FL. in 1975. Aircraft had been made flyable and was to depart to El Toro for display a little while later.
