C-124 at Willow Run

In the 1970’s there was a C-124 at a maintenance school at Willow Run. At some point in the late 70’s or early 80’s it was flown out of there.

Does anyone know where it ended up?

It was restored and flown to the museum at McChord AFB, Washington. It was the last flight of a Globemaster II.

The NMUSAF has some shots of it, a C-141 and a C-130 in formation.

BTW: I'm a huge 124 fan, just thge other day I was reading my dad's old Dash-1 (pilot operating handbook)....and my prize desk model is a 1/72 metal piece made by Allyn. Super plane.

I’m really glad to hear that!

I was told today that this was the one destroyed at the Bradley Air Museum, but this did not seem right.

The 124 was traded by the mechanics school for a Sabreliner. The 124 was towed across the field to the Yankee Air Museum ramp. Four engines and propellers were brought up from Wright Patterson and hung. The aircraft was flown stiff legged to Selferidge ANGB for a gear swing before being flown to McChord. If memory serves me correctly this happened in August or September of 1987 or 1988.

Back in the 90s the NMUSAF had huge (3' +) backlit (slide-like) shots of it and the 141 and 130 in the passageway to the Modern Flight Gallery. They were gone last time I was there, must have been taken down as part of a remodel when they built the new addition.
