Of the 2,936 men who officially flew in the Battle of Britain, July 10 through to October 31, 1940, 574 were Foreigners.

139 Poles

98 New Zealanders

86 Canadians

84 Czechs

29 Belgians

21 Australians

20 South Africans

11 Americans

and a smattering of pilots from Barbados, France, Ireland, Jamaica, Newfoundland, Palestine and Rhodesia.

Cheers,

Tom Walsh.

Note: the image is of a Spitfire canopy filled with smoke. I know its a crappy image but you might get the reference.

But seriously one of those 11 American pilots was a Nutmegger! Andew Mamedoff.

But talk about being in the corner! Literally! Born in Thompson Connecticut.

This reminds me that I've been meaning to find a good reference to the policy of encouraging suitable New Zealanders to join the RAF pre-war (which is why they are rather over-represented compared to other 'White Dominions').
