The military does not need or want it for a flying field. It's not in the best of shape and would require a lot of money to get it up to where it would need to be. It is in the center of a military base with restricted access and right across the harbor from a very large/very busy military/civilian field. Regardless of the solar panels being in place or not, the field isn't going to ever be back in service. At this point we are probably just lucky that any of the original structures remain for the museum.

Unfortunately, this is as good as its going to get.

When I was there in the early 80's, we used to do touch and go's on Ford Island. Never landed. There was also a golf course there. That was a lot of fun. Seem a shame that it has, or will, stop.


(I have a bunch of pictures I took as part of an "Attack on Pearl Harbor" recreation thing I thought would be cool. I'll dig them out and post them one of these decades. They show what the Japanese pilots would have seen when they flew over battleship row.)
