New P-51D Project Listed with Courtesy

Thu Jan 10, 2013 10:42 am

S/N 44-72254 Does not appear in Warbirds Directory #5, but a google search says it is an 8th Air Force Veteran. Anyone know the history of this project?

Does this ARC show it being accepted 6-27-45?

Can Odegaard wings build new P-51 wings from scratch (like Tri-State can build new
fuselages from scratch)? Or do they need at least something to start with, like all
the castings & forgings, etc.?

Seems like there are more Mustang fuselages (and tail feathers) floating around
out there than there are wings...

I believe MLG castings where the MLG pivot and also forms a rib like structure as it bolts onto the spar and has many large countersunk screws in it may be issues. It is a large magnesium casting and probably aren't being made by Odegarrd Wings but almost every other bent metal piece is available new.
Also the wing attach fittings are made from forgings so those might be an issue.
Of course being made to standards allowable by the FAA to be other than experimental is the main thing.

Thanks Rich. So MLG castings = Pork Chop fittings?

I don't suppose the FAA will go for a newly fabricated Mustang wing being in the "Owner-produced parts"
category.... :D

Several years ago Flugwerk (the folks who built the FW190 kitplanes) started making parts for what they call the"AP-51 Palomino". This was in order to distinguish what they built from the NAA product.
Key among the components is the main landing gear trunion boxes. I'm pretty sure this is the part that Rich is referring to. Flugwerk is using milled fittings as opposed to cast ones which is far superior. The biggest downside is that there is no way to legally put them into a certified airframe. This is unfortunate because it really is a limiting factor.
You can check out their site here

The pork chop fitting is a different animal :D than the trunion box.

I remember seeing the Flugwerk Palomino parts going together on the internet, but I didn't know they machined that fitting
as opposed to casting it and then machining it. Thanks for the info!

Pleasure Bela!

I seem to recall a great shot of the "pork chop" on the Bald eagle thread. That is a real interesting 99 pages to have to suffer through! :)

Maybe the Flugwerk parts could be used if the aircraft was in the Experimental category. I can't see someone passing up on the 8th Air Force provenance though.

Went digging for those photos and I think I found them:

What a great thread to read back through! (thanks again to Rich and Jim + all the crew/folks involved
with the Bald Eagle Aviation thread).

I thought that Flug Werk had pulled the plug on their operation altogether.

After doing a little more research this morning, I'd have to agree with you Mike.
The Flugwerk website is still active (with the exception of the video links) but I think nobody is at home.

Bela, That is the shot I remember. Immediately below that set is some great shots of, not only the trunion box but also the main fitting that joins the wing to the fuselage.

That being said about Flug Werk, I remember seeing a year ago or so? all of their equipment, jigs, fixtures, etc. for sale. Does anyone know where they went?
