Corsairs (2) ...

Sat Dec 29, 2012 1:22 pm

Here's a bunch of nice corsair images for the Stratford CT guys and gals. Again nice job with the young ones. Much needed for those poor folks, so here's wishing they had a small amount of peace from what you all did for them. Congrats.

Would be great to see a 'birdcage' corsair flying someday. Isn't one being restored to fly?

Note the difference in the tailwheel between early versions which had poor visibility on the carrier deck with a poor safety record-

Image

And the modified tailwheel with a taller extension to raise the tail-

They also raised the seat and installed the blown bubble shaped canopy.

Thanks Mark for the Kudos. My volunteers are among the best in the business and make it all happen.
Thats in Stratford at the airport, The yellow circle in the image below is the general area of the Compass Rose.

Very nice Drew, looks like much of your area down there is still somewhat intact

Also I'm fairly certain this shot was taken at the airport here in Stratford. Note the factory fresh schemes with no squadron markings on them. Image

Looks by dad's logbook he flew a few of the corsairs in the group photo. #'s 60 and 52 that I can make out in the front row. Can't make out the #'s in back rows too well.

The P-51/P-38/F4U formation photo made my day.

Was the Corsair the only type that had blue painted outer wing undersides?

(The next F4U model I build will be a birdcage in RN markings).

Great shots Mark!
BTW, the old Vought-Sikorsky Plant and hangars are not only somewhat intact, they are very intact. About the only things removed from the airport since 1929 were the taxiway across the road to Hangar 6 and the control tower mounted on the side of the big hangar. Everything else is there. Pretty unusual for something to survive intact that long!
If you think about it, there's nothing left to show the former presence of North American at LAX. :(

What's the story with your dad bellying in the Corsair?

I believe he told me it was some sort of engine failure.
