Antiques Roadshow...far and a way the best of them all! Just once though, I would love to see someone have their item appraised and when they ask "Are you kidding me"...for the appraiser to just once say "Yup...just kidding...this thing is junk"!

That is they are produced and that is why we watch. It's a formula.
We love to watch shows where we hate someone and other shows where we like someone.
Good guys and villains. It's been a common story line for on for years!

I love "Pickers" and really enjoy seeing the stuff they pass over that I would've bought in a heartbeat!

I'm guilty of watching Pickers, Pawn Stars, and Storage Wars. I like the stuff that turns up sometimes. But yeah these shows are scripted. I actually saw the Pickers guys give someone more than what they were asking because the guy didn't know what he had. Any one else see that the new girl on Pawn Stars got fired as she turned out to be a porrnn star! Haha!

I don't watch any of the gold or swamp or Duck or moonshiners crap, one of the cable channels has been rerunning 'American Hot Rod' and I'm amazed at how a few years had made this once popular show now seem so amateurish and phony, but it was the prototype for 'Chopper'(which also got tiring and unwatchable after about 4 years).

I watch 'Pickers' but never can understand why with some of the folks they deal with and their eagerness to sell everything they have, that these two don't show up with a front loader and an open top 53 foot trailer instead of leaving with items you could tote off in a 'SMART for Two'.

I'll bet the jugs of 'shine' are tap water as I REALLY doubt the ATF would allow that activity (or say, 'HMM wonder what a camera crew is doing clambering around in the Carolina hills for') and you visually can't tell untinted booze from ordinary water just by seeing it.

Having lived in both ends of Lousiana,immediate post Civil War Northern and more cosmopolitan New Orleans I've had a couple tries @ homebuilt 'sauce'. One wasn't bad, the other would have stripped paint off the bottom of a battleship which is why you have a COKE or RC Cola ready to thin it out a bit:vom: .

The channel has long been ruined by exectutives who pander to the short attention span crowd who love to watch shows like American Puckers,
Lumberjacks, Pawn shop, Swamp Tards, Ice road suckers, etc. -- you know, any show that has nothing to do with history, a subject that the majority of History Channel viewers consider boring.

History should change the name of the their channel because of their lack of history programming.

As a real Historian and history writer it was a dream of mine to appear on the channel; now, you couldn't pay me enough to walk into that stench.

Sorry if I was unclear. I totally, utterly and completely agree with your statement, Inspector. By the way, you completely forgot Nostra-dumb-ass and Ancient Aliens. (And I don't really like calling names, but that one was too good to pass up.) Also, as I noted above, at the same time their programming turned bad, they did change their name from "The History Channel" to "History". However, I do support your idea of a further, more accurate, name change.

And as far as being known as "the Hitler Channel" - I remember that moniker and frankly [my dear], I don't give a darn. Looking back, I really wish they would go back to showing Hitler stuff, because that was at least actual history.

Every once and a while, after telling people I'm a history major, I have people tell me: "Oh, you must like the History Channel then?", to which I have to respond with a "No." The bigger problem I find with "History" [Channel]'s programming is not the reality shows, as much as the conspiracy theory [expletive deleted]. It results in the less intelligent of the population thinking that because it's on TV, it must be legitimate theory - which it most obviously is not.

We stopped by Hardcore Pawn in MI last summer before going up to the CWH show. They were filming, and told us it was okay to go in but don't look straight at the cameras. Pop and the two kids were being filmed, and the producers asked if we wanted to be on the show, we said "no thanks". I've heard they spend most of the time in the back rooms, not on the floor.

Yup! One of the no bs shows. Velocity Channel, which I guess is an offshoot of Discovery has a few good ones too . "Cafe Racer"...love the Vincent's, Norton's, Enfield's etc. as well as the retro-jap cafe's. Wayne Carini's, "Chasing Classic Cars" is awsome for some of the very rare and one-off stuff and specials. "Wheeler Dealers" is also good for some of the less traveled stock, but the show can get towards that part of uncomfortable unreal reality.

I went to the Los Angeles taping of Antiques Roadshow many years ago; had to be at the Convention Center at 6 AM just to get in and with the crush of people they had I didn't get out of there until about 1:30 PM. I did get to see the host recording his opening for the show (fluffed his lines a couple times but didn't get upset). The items I brought (120-year-old Swiss commemorative medallion a friend dug up in his backyard, and my original salesman's guide book for the 1937 Studebaker) were valued at $100.00 and $200.00, so I guess they weren't exciting enough for the show - otherwise the appraisers would have sent me over to the main filming area.
Was a fun thing to do - once.
