Odd Question - How Big is a Spitfire Rudder?

Fri Dec 14, 2012 11:53 am

Hey all, I'm out and about for work right now and I can't do the "Measure a model and multiply as required" bit so I'll have to pass it on to the WIX brain trust. Just how big is a Spitfire rudder? Let's say a Mk.IX and it's mostly height I'm looking for. Close enough will suffice, I've just been thinking of making a static replica rudder to hang in the man cave and I want to be able to picture it.

Anyone have a rough dimension or two?

There are some blueprints out in digital form.
PN 36623-1-GA shows a height of 68.94".
OA width of about 38".
This is the pointed top rudder. I'm not sure if it was fitted to IXs .

Thanks for the quick reply, sounds like it should be a nice size at around five and a half feet. I was worried it would be close to eight!

Mk IXs had both round and pointed rudders, so, take your pick!
