What's in the Pratt & Whitney crates?

Probably a couple of Wright Cyclones or something...

The bottom crate says Pratt and Whitney Aircraft FT4/FT12 Power Ship Model; the upper crate says Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Table for Ship Model TPM 859B.
I bow to others who are more knowledgeable than I am to identify.
Ironically both crates state this way up with an arrow and both crates are upside down.

MiG 9

One of only 3 known to have survived

Actually, I believe this is an unrecorded FOURTH MiG-9. MiG-9 01 is in Russia. MiG-9 30 is at the Datangshan Museum. MiG-9 86104 is at the Beihang Museum. 86104 was stored in this parking lot, but was removed prior to this photo being taken. It is also the one painted blue in the photo in Lightjug's post on the Beijing Air and Space Museum.

I have a photo from May 2011 which shows 86104 resting between a CJ-6 and an La-11, and also shows this fuselage up by the fence just as it is seen in this photo. That means TWO MiG-9s were in this lot at the same time at one point. Since neither of them are the one in Russia nor the one at Datangshan, the only conclusion is that Beihang University has a fourth MiG-9 they haven't told anyone about.

But honestly, judging from its condition, it might not be considered a "survivor." Nevertheless, it did exist at the time of the photos.

EDIT: Moderators, I just realized after the fact that I was posting in an old thread. My apologies for that. If possible, could you spin off my post as a new thread on "A Fourth MiG-9?" so that any follow-on discussion would be on-topic? Thanks!

When I was in China in 2007, I saw 3 MiG-9's. Two of them were at Beijing University and one was at Datangshan.

Well, that pretty much seals it. This is the FOURTH MiG-9. Now it's a matter of attributing it - is it a production model, or is it one of the various prototypes? I do know that a couple of the prototypes were production models that were receiving modifications but were never completed - could this be one of those?

It is at the Central Air Force Museum in Monino, Russia.

BTW, here's one of the photos I took of the lot while staying at the Vision Hotel next door. You can see MiG-9 86104 on the left, and the fourth MiG-9 by the fence just above the cockpit of the Q-5.

I understand your concern about being off-topic, but I'm curious as to why being an old thread is a concern? After reading Brit, Oz and NZ forums for years it's common for folks resurrecting old threads with new info to apologize for doing so. I always thought it was a quality trait of the commonwealther's to be as good as they are in their attempts to provide a thorough history of their subject...no matter how long it took to assemble the story. It's a lot nicer to have all the goodies in one place rather than chasing all the bits 'round the archives....No worries...just sayin'....

Well, good - being new here, I didn't want to ruffle feathers right off the bat. Plus, since the thread started on the P-61, I didn't know if it might be better to have a separate thread for the discovery and documentation of a fourth MiG-9, which would seem to be a big deal.

As I noted, I see your dilemma on the off-topic aspect. You could live dangererously AND post a new thread on the 4th MiG-9 with a link back to this page in order to get all the photos in perspective. Regardless Aahz, nice catch on the -9 and welcome to WIX!

An oddity in the WIX search feature..when you query the search with MiG-9, it replies no such animal has been discussed.

Nah, I'm not much on living dangerously. ;-) Though I may still do a separate thread anyway. And thanks! I had taken that photo back in 2011, but with the exception of the Harrier, the P-47D, and the T-6, I had not identified the specific aircraft. I recently started to do so, starting with what turned out to be the P-61 (which is what led me to this site, actually). I did have some assistance from another aircraft enthusiast on DeviantArt, who helped with some of the Chinese clones of Russian aircraft and other stuff. It was he who first suggested that the fuselage near the fence might be another MiG-9, but between my other photos and those posted on WIX, I made the final definitive ID that it was the fourth MiG-9. The DeviantArt member did persuade me to make an announcement about it somewhere, though, so I chose WIX since that is where I found the other pics of that fuselage.

EDIT: I've started a new thread on just the Fourth MiG-9, so please direct further discussion on it here.

I've also made an update to the Wikipedia article on the MiG-9 telling of a fourth airframe, but I'll need to fill in some details and add references and photos.

I already discovered that. I had to use Google to re-locate the forum threads I needed.

It may have been discussed before but is that a B-25 nacelle in the upper left of the parking lot pic? It's not, like, from one of those Mitchell's, is it?

It is my understanding that the fuselage segment at the very top left is the mid-section of a B-25, so it is possible that the single engine/nacelle/wing segment is from a B-25 as well, maybe the same bird as the midsection is from.

My uncle flew a B-25, among other aircraft, before being killed in a U-2 spyplane crash.

Enlighten me - "those" Mitchells?

The 61 is seen in your parking lot photo so you are clearly on topic :)

One of "Those" Mitchells would be reference to a Doolittle Raider 25 I'd imagine.
