The Intrinsic Details of F4U-5N FAH 609 Buno 124715

Mon Sep 17, 2012 8:06 pm

F4U Folks:

We've been informed by the FMAH director Col. San Martin that an effort will me made to try to capture with pics some details on the wings of FAH 609 showing its Korea War markings. I.E NP 0X & Poss VC-3. Same with the Buno & the markings at the tail "F4U-5N 124715.

So far, we know the right wing shows these numbers on the mod plate----> A-4-670. We 'll look the numbers on the id plate by the battery compartment and elevators also.

F4U FAH 609 Folks:

The metalic id plate above the instrument panel. It says "avion 609" (aircraft 609) "Sulfato" from the chemical Sulfa & just below "chip detector". This particular aircraft & his famous pilot Cpt Fernando Soto Enriquez did a bit of damage in the territory beyond Rio Goascoran!! (El Salvador, July 1969 100 Hrs War!)

Just below & barely visible on this photo is a one of kind factory ID metal plate indicating also the Buno 124715. Photo via J.R

F4U-5N FAH 609 Folks:

Back in c. March 1989 during a visit to the FAH Museum FAH 609 was proudly on display in front of the O'Club at Toncontin Airport.

F4U-5N FAH 609 Buno 124715 is not displaying in the cockpit L/hand panel the original Chance-Vought F4U-5N ID plate that should looked like the enclosed picture (for illustration purposes only). Instead, it shows a Mod Plate ID plate with the right C/N fm from the Vought factory-----> A10-559!

Image

p.s Anyone knows about a blank Chance-Vought F4U Id plate or a place to obtain a duplicate ID plate like the ones seen on the restored F4U aircraft??

Im pretty sure it should be a Dallas, Texas plate instead of a Stratford, Connecticut plate since as far as we know all -5s were produced in Texas.

W/Kid:

Good day!!

That's even more interesting as we're looking to reproduce the original cabin ID plate.

p.s We would like to see a copy of the Dallas cabin ID plate for any F4U-5. Tks

124715 was accepted on charge as a F4U-5N, built under Contract Number 10484, 23 July 1951 at Dallas.

123168 was accepted on charge as a F4U-5N, 30 Aug 1949, Contract Number 9771.

FAH 609/F4U Folks:

A mod plate similar to the one in the enclosed picture is the one currently on the left hand side of the cockpit cabin of FAH 609. It reads C/N A10-559. Photo via Wix.

We are curious to know if FAH 600 Buno 124724, FAH 601 Buno 124560, FAH 604 Buno 122179, FAH 605, Buno 122184, & FAH 606, Buno 124486, had their original Dallas factory cockpit ID plates??

If you want to carefully remove paint layers to find those lying beneath, I suggest using very fine grade wire wool with a little water as a lubricant. It works very well if you're carful with the application and don't get too carried away with rubbing. I look forwards to seeing the results!

Cheers,
Richard

PS. I'd be very keen to see what a Dallas ID plate looks like, as I've never seen one before.

F4U-5N/FAH 609 Folks:

Good Day!

Pictured below is one of the closest Navy schemes for what we believe is Buno 124715. Both Bunos have been found at the tail section, some VC-3 markings are also showing plus the "N" 0f NP markings on the vertical stab are surfacing also. More to come later. Photo via Wix.

Does anyone has a better resolution pic that the one shown??
