He's a Brit on vacation in Canada, don't know how he talked his way into that...!

Edit: Finally got the story, apparently they raffled off 2 rides as part of a fundraiser, one of the winners was a 10 year old boy who got to the Mars and decided that he didn't want to go. My friend had gone along in the boat just to take photos, when the boy decided that he didn't want to go they offered his spot to my friend. He seems to have that kind of luck..... 30 minute flight
