Hi Jason!

With a 454, you'll blow away my '56 Cessna 310 race car project on the street. I'll be doing endurance road races that last between 16-24 hours over two days, so reliability and fuel mileage is key for me. I'm starting with a mid-engined, rear-drive, fuel-injected 4 cylinder.

Glad to see I'm not the only nut that wants to take a beautiful old aircraft, and make it street-driven! I dealt with the same "Why not restore it?!?" stuff too. It's simply not cost-effective, and my twin-engined 310 is not as rare as your T28. It was heading for the crusher, so whatever I do to preserve it is preferable to that fate. Also, it was a bargain at two grand, so I won't have much in it even once it's completed (maybe twice that).

Good luck on your project, and if you want to brainstorm, let me know!

Jason,
Good show! Don't worry with the negative comments...It's yours, do what you want. The nay sayers should have stepped up to the plate a long time ago...They're just like my ex-wife...they are not happy unless there is something to carp about..

Looks like I'm off the Laredo run for now...hope it will start up soon so I can get the panel to you.

I may have to stop by your place so we can paint the Freightliner up like a WWII transport...with the Invasion stripes too!

Look forward to your creation!

G.

Another cool project! Maybe you can paint your 310 in USAF markings?

As hard as it is to believe that 310 Cessna could be polished out pretty easily with a wool pad on an automotive paint buffer. I would use the stainless steel grade buffing compound first. You could have that thing shining in a few hours and then paint the USAF markings on it. It does look a bit like a German jet though. I would be tempted to modify the cockpit into one. Either way, it is a neat idea.

Cool project, and from the other projects on your website, looks like this will be a definite head turner when you finish. Looking forward to seeing pictures here as it progresses.

I've got an extra gallon or two of olive drab laying around here somewhere.

It will be next week before I can get down to the hanger and get pictures of the engine. It is still in pieces. The case/block is made in a front and back half, so that was an easy fix. The cylinders were another story. The fins want to fall off, so I have to weld each fin to the cylinder now. I gutted the prop gear reduction unit and that took off even more weight. The crankshaft/rotating assembly was about 180lbs. The cylinders haven't been bolted back on the case yet, but that shouldn't be to hard with only half the number of bolts to put back in now. I need to sandblast and paint the engine before I get to carried away with putting it back together.

I have no updates yet. I've been busy working on normal stuff. I haven't made it down to the hanger lately.

I finally took a couple of days to work on my project instead of the projects of others. Since none of the original hydraulic, electric, or fuel systems are of any use in the car project, I removed as much of that as I could in three days time. A guy came in from Florida that needed the nose gear and box. I was going to have to remove that anyhow in order to install a steel tube frame under the floors to mount all of the automotive parts to. I had no idea a T28 was this advanced until I tried to gut one. I still have a lot of things to remove under the floors. I plan on leaving the rear cockpit pretty bare for room, and I hope to install a few antique radios in the front cockpit. I''ll remount the pedals as brake and gas pedals in the front cockpit, but the joy sticks are going away. I'll end up installing a yoke in the front to use as a steering wheel. At least the cockpits don't have several inches of debris in them now like they did when I hauled it home.
