A nice drive from SA through the Hill Country and through the pretty town of Brady ("The Heart of Texas" reads their sign) is Abilene.
Brownwood has a F-111 and F-4 at the airport....
If you can get access to Dyess, they have a great airpark.
Visible from the public roads include a B-1B, C-130, P-40 model, and F-4c.

The small air[port just north of the interstate (not Abilene Regional) is home to the local CAF Squadron,

Not far North is Brekenridge....Mr. Pardue's collection is always inside, but a stop by Ezell Aviation is a must, you'll seethe rebuilding anything and everything...Mustangs, Sea Furys, Corsairs, yiou name it. Call and ask first, they're nice people and might show you ariound.

Heading west, on I-20 there is a T-33 and Huey Cobra at Sweetwater's city park.
( not far nort is Snyder with the F-105 and F-101 that are well-known to form members)
A bit further west there is Big Spring there is the Hangar 18 Museum with all kinds of stuff.
Both of which will lead to Midland, CAF HQ.

A general observation, it doesn't really pay to take a chance to go tocountry airports, in Texas 99% of the planes seem to be hangared.
It can be a bit of a drive, SA to Midland would be about a good days drive...without stops.

Lone Star in Galveston is about 45 minutes away from NASA Hq.

The Alamo Liaison Squadron's headquarters is just south of San Antonio off of Loop 1604 and Applewhite Road. Best to be there on a Wednesday or Saturday.

Of course there are CAF units in San Marcos, Georgetown, and Burnet, which are all within a day trip of San Antonio.

The CAF wing at the Lancaster Airport, the Cold War Museum and my C-140A.. All in the same day...

I don't know if a person could stand to take that all in, in one day.....especially the mighty 140!!
