Warbird Information Exchange

A flying friend of mine is going on a temporary work reassignment to San Antonio for a month and wants to see the aircraft that Texas has to offer. I have told him about Lone star but I have not visited anything else so that is why I come to the experts for help. It does not have to be a large collection, a single example in the sticks is just as exiting. Time and distance should not be a problem either as he is single !!! Thankyou Rad

Depending on how much he wants to travel, you've got the CAF in Midland, USS Lexington in Corpus Christie, Cavanaugh and Frontiers of Flight in Dallas

Lone Star in Galveston is about 4-1/2 hours from San Antonio.

In the Dallas - Ft. Worth area:
Vintage Flying Museum in Ft. Worth @ Mecham Field - About 15 planes in a WWII hanger.
Veterans Memorial Air Park a couple of miles south of Vintage - about cold war/Vietnam era 20 planes outside in a park setting
Cold War Flying Museum in Lancaster (south of Dallas)
CR Smith American Airlines Museum near DFW airport between Dallas and Ft. Worth-Nice history of American Airlines w/a DC3

To see the above plus Cavanaugh and Frontiers of Flight would definitely be a 2 day trek.

In the San Antonio area:

The CAF's Central Texas wing at the San Marcos Airport has about 15 aircraft, mostly WWII era. I'd say about an hour from San Antonio.
Pioneer of Flight at Kinsgbury-just off IH10 east of San Antonio past Seguin-nice collection of WWI/early aviation-1 hour.
Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg - only has about 5 aircraft but it's a great museum - allow 4-5 hours to see it all. The have an "annex" that is several blocks away from the main museum. Fredericksburg is a neat town with a nice 50's diner at the airport. A little over an hour from San Antonio.
I know there is a museum in the SE San Antonio area that has about 10 planes or so but can't remember the name of it right now.

He can come to Breckenridge and get the tour. We have a lot of different aircraft being worked on.

Now to hijack the thread, but what can be seen thorugh Texas that is 4immediately adjacent to I-10? My wife and I will be passing through there in September as part of an epic cross-country road trip. I'm managed to get her to agree to seeing the USS Texas and NASA HQ at Houston and the Alamo, and I just realized that the Nimitz museum is just north of the highway.
I don't know of much more that's very close to the freeway along the way...

1: How far west are you going? If you make it as far as El Paso, the War Eagles Air Museum is not that far off of I-10 in Santa Teresa, NM.
2: it will still be hot (and muggy) aboard the USS Texas in September, so make sure to drink plenty of liquid. Hot, muggy and you can probably count on swarms of love bugs.



That is an interesting one too. The museum is very well maintained, but what was Webb is rundown. There are still many buildings that look military and the it is still obvious that it was once a military base. Also there is a Vietnam memorial with an F-4E, UH-1, AH-1 and an M60A-3 east of the airport.

If you want a PFM tour, best notify somebody in advance -- the more in advance the better. Contact me or the museum directly via the web site and be sure somebody knows you're coming, otherwise the goodies are liable to all locked up and tucked away.

It s been 6 or 7 yrs but the old Kelly AFB was open to the public i remeber seeing a B 58, f 111 & and FANG 2 seat 106. Some of the the old bldgs looked like they had some stories to tell, and over at Brooks AFB a F 100 and some kind of C 141 loading training

Unless you got a Military ID Kelly is off limits..Brooks is shut down, don't know what is left over there to see.

The B-58, F-111 and F-106 are still open to the public @ Kelly.

The Texas may be closed...for a while...she is still leaking badly and in need of buckets of money.
