Went to Frank Borman, Ed Shipley and now Dan Friedkin.

Wow, a sudden revival of a thread after lying dormant for more than 2 1/2 years.....

It would be great to see a list of currently flyable Sabres. I know there is one in Montana or Idaho being restored in the colors of "The Minutemen" Colorado ANG demo team from the late 50's. Hope to see that flying at air shows next year or not too long after that.

The "Skyblazers" Sabre in Florida that Dale Snodgrass has flown, to the best of my knowledge has not flow since the March 2010 TICO Warbird show. I understand that insurance issues are keeping it grounded. Would love to see it fly again.

I know there were THREE Sabres flown together at the Davis-Monthan AFB Heritage Flight Conference in March this year and I believe "The Horsemen" pilots of Steve Hinton, Ed Shipley and Dan Friedkin were flying them. There is supposedly a "chance" that The Horsemen may fly a 3-ship Sabre routine at the Offutt AFB, Nebraska show in late August, but it would seem more likely to be Mustangs or the Lightning/Mustang combination. I would love to see the Sabre routine happen.

I just saw the Vintage Wings of Canada "Golden Hawk" Sabre fly at the Hamilton, Ontario show last weekend and that was a beautiful sight. And I am looking forward to seeing the Warbird Heritage Foundation's F-86F Sabre "Smokey" fly at Thunder Over Michigan in August.

Would still love to see a "Gathering of Sabres" or just a large "Gathering of Classic Vintage Jets" at an air show someday (maybe in 2013??). My only condition is that L-39's NOT be a major part of any such gathering.

It was, wasn't it? But while I certainly agree that the Canadair Sabre's a lovely bit of kit and the Goldehawks scheme has to be in the top all time display or Sabre schemes - it doesn't have "the best engine ever put in a Sabre" as the announcer kept claiming. Nice engine, but it ain't no Avon.

Now, just to get out of Canada alive, and I'm good...

Noooo! Currently in Sydney airport, but on an Air Canada flight, so minutes to escape. As soon as we've been sprayed with eau de bug, I'm outa here!

Whoops! What I meant to say was: Great to meet you Dave, and thanks to all those Canadians and Americans who made my visit to North America such a blast - it was a great trip, and I was delighted to see the Hawk One Sabre 'in the flesh', truly a great warbird.

Dragging the thread back on topic by the scruff of it's neck, we currently have one flying CAC Avon powered Sabre, but the good(er) news is a second is very close to flying with taxi runs completed, on my last info. This is Jeff Trappett's example in Victoria, and as is often the case, more is good.

Some time ago I wrote a piece on the RAAF Museum's Sabre which is operated by the Temora Aviation Museum, as a case study; details here.

And a very few, very exclusive TAM/RAAFM Avon Sabre baseball caps were delivered to the very very deserving (you know who you are, and thanks again, guys) at Hamilton this last weekend, so anyone seeing a Sabre cap on a WIX member from the great white north, or stations south, might just want to check if it has a roo in the roundel rather than the leaf...

And on Sabres more generally, any other changes to the original list people want to share?

Regards,

(Wow, the decor inside this igloo's really neat! Can I have some whisky to go around these rocks please, nurse?)
