They're commemorating the occasion in great numbers here in the Washington, D.C. area. I just wonder when someone is going to notice that Rolling Thunder, despite good intentions, is an inappropriate way to mark a somber occasion.

While I do not care for those loud motorcycles, I must question the motivation of the posting I am quoting. Most of us know that the vast majority of Hoggly-Ferguson owners are of the mistaken belief that their American-made machines must be accompanied by unnecessary noise in order to keep running. However, these people with those excessively noisy vehicles tend to lean strongly to patriotism. In case folks haven't noticed, patriotism is fading rapidly in this modern "me, me, me" world.

I'm much less concerned about how people choose to remember than I am that they do remember.

Taste is subjective. Just ask me about paint jobs on warbirds and you'll see...! HIIYOOO!

I'll be thinking of my Uncle Gerry, who was killed in a KC-135 crash at Wurtsmith AFB. I never met him, but his widow gave me a good bit of his military effects and I have been fortunate to learn a lot about him and his service. I think a lot of families can relate to this type of situation. I hope the memories of those who have sacrificed for our country are sweet, and there is no pain for anyone remembering those they have lost. Thanks to everyone who has sacrificed their lives for our country.

I will be spending the majority of the long weekend going around to different graveyards and cleaning-up/sprucing-up grave markers of veterans. Two weekends ago, I was cleaning-up a grave marker that was covered in grass clippings and dirt. As I cleared the stuff away, I noticed that the gentleman buried there was a Marine that was killed on Iwo Jima. I stood up to get a better look at my work, only to find a woman in a white flowered dress standing less than 10 feet away from me. Startled at first, I introduced myself to her. She told me that the gentleman's marker that I was cleaning up was an Uncle of hers that she never met! His brother was in town for a wedding and she would let him know of my efforts. Moments like that affect me deeply. The grave marker was spotless when I left the graveyard.

All gave some and some gave all. Please try to remember that statement, especially this weekend.

Here's something I first posted elsewhere a long while back... I don't often like to rehash stuff, but in this case I make a once-a-year-re-post exception.

Here's to a safe and happy, and hopefully thoughtful, long weekend for all here in the USA.

And remember, it's not just a three-day weekend.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For those here in the USA...

While you're enjoying whatever festivities you may have planned for this long weekend...

While you're savoring your dogs and burgers or other delicacies...

While you take in the 500 on Sunday...

While you enjoy the company of family and friends...

Please remember what this coming holiday is all about, and take a moment to consciously consider why we are all able to enjoy the aforementioned pleasures...

---------------------------------------------------------
Brothers in Arms
by Mark Knopfler

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms

Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I've watched all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the sun's gone to hel l
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

Fade to Black...

I wish you all a safe Memorial Day, & thank you all that are serving, have served & those that have supported our defenders of FREEDOM, in past & present, with that I leave you all a couple of things that should be a reminder to us all of past sacrifices :spit

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

When a squadron of P-47 Thunderbolts attacked a gunpowder storage depot, the ensuing explosion destroyed one of their aircraft. The grave for the pilot was made by a refugee French couple, with .50-cal. ammunition for a border.

On Memorial Day, the Military Aviation Museum in Va. Beach will be launching 5 Warbirds for a flyover in support of a wreath laying ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in Virginia Beach. Wheels up time is noon, and the FG-1D Corsair, P-51D Mustang, P-40E Kittyhawk, FM-2 Wildcat and TBM-3E Avenger will all be launched for this event. Come on out to see the event, and say "Thanks" to our veterans!
