I attended a lecture by Hong My and Dan Cherry at Historic Flight Foundation last year and will tell you right now it is a MUST ATTEND!!!

The B-17 at the warbirds in review is enough to get my juices flowing. I haven't seen a Fort on the ground for my last 3 Airventures, it would be a welcome sight.

The most recent EAA site update indicates that Mr Lewis will be bringing not only the P-40, but also Glacier Girl and his P-39.

From mid-June to the end of August, we will travel to the New World with one of the four JU 52s. Apart from visiting Lufthansa's Super Connie in Auburn, Maine, the trip continues to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Denver, Oshkosh, Toronto and New York. More information will be given out in May.

EAA ANNOUNCEMENT 1 MAY 2012

B-29 FIFI Returns, Offers Flights at AirVenture 2012

The Commemorative Air Force's iconic Boeing B-29 bomber FIFI, the world's only remaining flying example of the aircraft, will return to Oshkosh this year for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2012. Along with the airplane's usual appearances in static and flying displays at Oshkosh, AirVenture attendees will be able to purchase flights in the aircraft for the first time.

AirVenture flights will be based at Outagamie County Regional Airport in Appleton - just 20 miles north of Oshkosh - and will be available July 22-29. Complete information and registration details are available on the CAF website (www.cafb29b24.org).

First flight of Boeing's Superfortress was in 1942, with active service starting in 1944. It was the B-29 Enola Gay that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, in August 1945. B-29s were also used in the Korean War in the early 1950s and were a staple of the U.S. Air Force until the late 1950s.

The plane that would become FIFI was saved from use as a ground target for weapons tests in the 1960s and first flown by the CAF in 1971. It was christened in honor of the wife of Col. Victor N. Agather, who had been on the wartime development team for the aircraft and had been personally committed and involved with the airplane's restoration in the early 1970s.

A once-in-a-lifetime "bucket list" package will be made available for auction on Thursday, July 26 at EAA's Gathering of Eagles, the annual gala that draws more than 1,000 people and raises funds for EAA's youth programs that help grow participation in aviation. The winning bidders will fly in the B-29 on Friday, July 27, with Dutch Van Kirk, the B-29 Enola Gay navigator that flew the first atomic bomb mission over Japan in 1945, and with the CAF's B-25 with Doolittle Raider Dick Cole in the cockpit.

The special flight is being coordinated as part of that day's "Salute to Veterans" at AirVenture 2012, which is honoring "The Greatest Generation in the Air."

Oshkosh was first stop for rescued sections of aircraft in 1992
EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wis. — (April 26, 2012) — The Lockheed P-38 Glacier Girl, the fearsome twin-boom fighter aircraft that has become one of the world’s most well-known warbirds since its rescue from the Greenland ice cap in 1992, will return to Oshkosh for EAA AirVenture on the 20th anniversary of its first public appearance.

The aircraft, which began flying in 2002 after a 10-year restoration, will be part of the weeklong activities at AirVenture, “The World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration,” July 23-29 at Wittman Regional Airport.
Glacier Girl’s appearance comes 20 years after its first trip to Oshkosh, when the Greenland Expedition Society members Pat Epps, Don Brooks, and others brought the P-38’s salvaged parts direct from the ice cap to the 1992 EAA Fly-In Convention in a DC-3. The display became a sensation among aviation enthusiasts and the national media following the unprecedented effort to extract the aircraft after 50 years below the ice.

“Glacier Girl is a draw everywhere it goes not only because flying P-38s are so rare, but the human challenge to its recovery that made this restoration stand above so many others,” said Jim DiMatteo, EAA’s vice president of AirVenture features and attractions. “Twenty years ago, the mere appearance of the rescued parts caused a huge stir at Oshkosh. The pride at seeing the airplane fly at Oshkosh is not diminished two decades later.”

The project began in 1981 when Epps and Richard Taylor organized the initial Greenland Expedition Society. It finally gained success 11 years later, when the late Roy Shoffner was a major contributor to the project. That 13th rescue effort included digging through 268 feet of ice and pulling the airplane piece-by-piece to the surface, reclaiming the only survivor of the six P-38s and two B-17s abandoned during a 1942 trans-Atlantic ferry flight.

The airplane finally flew again in October 2002 and has been at Oshkosh on a regular basis since 2003. It is now the crown jewel of the Lewis Air Legends collection based in San Antonio, Texas, and owned by aviation enthusiast Rod Lewis. It is regarded as one of the finest warbird restorations flying anywhere in the world. Lewis is also planning to bring a classic P-39 and P-40 to AirVenture 2012 as part of what is the world’s largest annual warbird aircraft reunion, with nearly 400 aircraft attending.

Bob Cardin, who was the project manager during the 1992 rescue effort and later directed the airplane restoration, will describe the challenges and triumphs for the Greenland Expedition Society during presentations throughout AirVenture week.

Smoke On! Brazilian Military to Make Oshkosh Debut

Announced today...

Brazil's famed Esquadrihla da Fumaca - "Smoke Squadron" - military flight team will bring its thrilling aerial displays to Oshkosh for the first time this summer, headlining the afternoon air show at "The World's Greatest Aviation Celebration."

It marks the first time since 1986 that a full national military demonstration team will perform at AirVenture. The Brazilian group will be at Oshkosh for the entire week and will fly several days during the event. Exact dates and times of their performances will be announced as they are finalized.

"This is a tremendous addition to the AirVenture 2012 lineup," said Jim DiMatteo, EAA's vice president of AirVenture features and attractions. "The Smoke Squadron flies incredible routines that showcase their flying skills and the spirit of their home country. Aviation fans will not want to miss their performances throughout the week."

The Esquadrihla da Fumaça was established in 1952 and is the official air demonstration squadron of the Brazilian Air Force. The team features 13 highly trained pilots flying the Embraer T-27 Tucano aircraft through 55 high-performance aerobatics maneuvers. Their specialties are the dazzling maneuvers that feature smoke trails that create live artwork in the sky.

The squadron has flown more than 3,500 demonstrations through its history, with performances in North and South America, Europe, and Africa. More information is available through the squadron's website.
"The appearance of the Smoke Squadron is another major step in continually raising our air show lineup at Oshkosh," DiMatteo said. "The AirVenture air show is already known as an all-star event in the air show world, but with the Smoke Squadron, the Canadian SkyHawks, and others, it's going to be at a whole new level in 2012."

EAA reporting today that the aircraft to be recovered from Lake Michigan and displayed at Airventure "might" be a Grumman Wildcat instead of the previously reported SBD-3.
