Anybody know why the runway markings as they land say "34" and then below that "8" in a circle? If it's runway 34 what is the 8 for?

Without going back and watching the film again--spare me--I think it was a B, not an 8. Like maybe they had A and B parallel runways, which we'd today call R and L.

Here's a screengrab. It's at 07:48 in the film.

As to why '8' I've no idea. For a guess, could it be a particular field identifier where several airfields are close together and trainees landing at the wrong base?

Good guess. Maybe an ID for one of numerous Auxliary Airfield's or NOLF's.

Cool vid, Huntz Hall escapes the East Side and goes to war.

Thanks for the actor ID, interesting guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huntz_Hall

Can't tell from the airfield photo if all the numbers in the circles are the same or not-

A scary thought: "Sach" as a pilot!

Looking at the still photo of NAS Melbourne, it appears that the runway ends are numbered sequentially, starting with rwy 31 as "1", and going counter-clockwise, ending with rwy 34 as "8".

And more importantly what AWESOME Wildcat footage!
