Randy:
Pictured below is the aircraft in question. B/w taken somewhere CentralAmerica c. UKN. Perhaps some of the fellow Wixers can help us with its ID. C/W.com

Definately not a Mustang. Looks far larger, like some kind of transport.

Hi All,
The wreckage corresponds to Honduran Air Force C-54D-10-DC, FAH 799, which crashed in Costa Rica on November 29, 1974, while enroute to Albrook AFB, CZ.
I have color photographs of such remains, one of them taken from a slightly different angle … almost identical to the above B&W newspaper photo.
Positively not a Mustang …
Cheers,
Amado

Not bad FAH 503! Yes..the picture has too much vegetation and tall trees which are unlikely at the area where the P-51 went down. This a/c was by the way an X Guatemalan AF / FAG 800 delivered to Honduras c. 1973. It was flying away fm his assigned route from Howard AB to Tegucigalpa, Honduras when it crashed!
Randy...we'll keep digging for more '69 data. We have a picture of the ID plate that Capt Cortez went down in '69. FAS FG-1D Buno 67071. Someone took it to FAS Ilopango museum years after! Tks to all for the ID/data provided.
