Hey WIXers, I recall a discussion on here about B-17's that the NMUSAF has out on loan to organizations or museums that they (NMUSAF) are wanting back because of neglect. Does anyone have any recollection of this? I can't find it anywhere and any help would be appreciated as to which B-17's are in question. The museum that I moved the T-33 and the A26 to, are very interested in finding out more about this. If memory serves correct, the NMUSAF would consider relocation of one of the B-17's at the organizations expense to move and maintain. Thanks for any help :drink3: :drink3: :drink3:

Have you talked to NMUSAF about that yet? If things haven't changed recently, they have a waiting list of groups/organizations that would like to have an aircraft on static display as that particular type becomes available. The list for B-17 and B-24 aircraft were pretty long last time I checked. And your definition of derelict and NMUSAF's are totally different. The museum has been doing a better job recently of bringing in a few aircraft out of the cold that were neglected, but there are still lots of WWII era aircraft on outdoor display, including bombers, transports, and a few fighters. I would think that you would stand a much better chance of getting one on long-term loan if you were able to show NMUSAF that you not only had indoor display/storage space for the aircraft in question, but the finances and logistical cabability to move, reassemble and restore the airplane. I'd call NMUSAF and ask to talk to their loan coordinator to find out what is possible.

The NMUSAF's definition of derelict (if they even use that term) and "ours" may be different.

The only B-17 I recall the NMUSAF repossessing is the Memphis Belle.
They don't consider the B-17s kept outside at military bases derelict or at risk, because if they did, they would have moved them by now.

It would be interesting to get their opinion on the gas station and Tulare aircraft, but since they are not owned by the govt.. they have no power at all to repossess them.

I agree about that Lightning, particularly since it was essentially airworthy when mounted on that plinth...but at least it looks likes it gets regular TLC. Found this from a few years back: http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/pudgyivrd_1.htm

Speaking of P-38s, remember that until recently and being put under cover, the Bong memorial P-38 in Poplar, WI was outside.

When i was a kid my dad commanded the maintenance squadrons for the active duty F-106s at Duluth.
Periodically they went to paint it.
All too often, that's what passes for restoration of static aircraft.
