That's the early version of the gun nose. Later they were staggered back up the centerline of the fuselage.
NEAM's A-26 had that nose when the aircraft was donated to them in the early 1970's.

Maybe the one in the crate offered is a prototype, but the one in the photos on the aircraft is the very first version of the gun nose. These did see combat in WWII. Most were installed on the flat, cockpit panel versions with one pilot seat and only one clamshell cockpit enclosure.
They later changed the nose to the style in the photo posted by "Wildchild" (above) and there were definitely more of these produced that the earlier style.

I was at the Buckeye "Air Fair" where this bird is located just a couple of weekends ago and was lamenting the fact that this Invader had been languishing for so long. Good to see the owner has finally decided to let loose of it and I hope it's not too little, too late for the old girl.

One of the first 4 A-26's sent to the Pacific for combat testing.. 3rd Attack Group ( mid 44'). Flat top version

Not sure I understand the comment Wildchild. Somebody says this Invader flies? Pretty sure it has not flown for 40+ years. I know for a fact it has not flown in the past 20.

The eBay listing says that the engines need work, and the controls re-attached, but can be flown again. So my guess is that it can be flown out

The only way it will fly out is with the help of a crane. Both engines are siezed, the cockpit is stripped, and it has had no maint other than keeping the tires aired up for at least 35 years.
