Aussie Air Force grounds worlds oldest Mustang warbird

Wed Feb 22, 2012 8:10 pm

I was told today that the RAAF has had to ground its CACMustang warbird - the worlds oldest operational Mustang by an Air Force - due to several issues with the airframe???.

It is currently based at Point Cook Museum.

Anyone know anymore on this?

What did the staff at Point Cook say when you contacted them, Phil?

The Mustang is suffering from several problems; the most serious and expensive of which is metal filings in the oil filter screens. A new/overhauled Merlin will be poisonously expensive. Unless funding is forthcoming the bird won't be flying in the foreseeable future.

Thanks for that, Keith, I emailed the RAAF Museum a couple of days ago but had no response.
