It started out with 900+ HP and ended up with 2000+ HP engine with nearly 600 cubic inches greater displacement and probably 800 lbs or so greater weight.
The length of the fuselage didn't grow aft so the only way to balance the beast is the ballast.
There is a drawing I have seen that has all the positions of the prop for each different model superimposed on each other which dramatically shows how the nose grew with each powerplant improvement.
All I can say is it was successful.

Got all the parts I sent out for the P-51 back and installed.

Made some ground runs.

Got the annual done and everything buttoned up and Jim flew her last week.

Taxi out

The flight was at the end of the day with dusk approaching.

Landing.

Coming back to the hangar.
