F2G race 74

I love both aircraft but #57 just has that something extra that makes it just a little prettier to me. It's fantastic to see two F2Gs flying together. Is Doug Champlain's aircraft airworthy?

...nice thought. Would have been cool to have the 3 of them on the field together....who would have thunk it a few years ago. The Corsair that Champlin had is now part of the collection at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. Probably never to see the sky again.

I thought Doug retained ownership of the F2G and the KI-43 Oscar. Is this not accurate?

I thought that it was the FW-190 that wasn't included in the sale to the MoF.

It was only the 190D that Champlin retained after the sale of the museum, until purchased by Paul Allan. So far as I know Champlin never owned any of the Oscars, although I think he was heavily involved in getting that project started with Tischler way back when.

Looking at the Museum of Flight website it looks like the F2G is in fact owned by that museum. But when you look at the Ki-43 page it says at the very bottom of the spec list:

So thats interesting.

Nothing wrong with a static example to go along with two flying examples.

Good point, put it into perspective. 2 out of about 12 or so complete B-24s 1 out of around 20ish complete B-29s. (yes my inventory is a rough guess)

Amazing pictures, thank you Chris!!! What a glorious sight. Those detail shots will really come in handy when I get around to building the 1/48 Super Corsair models I've got. I really hope they'll both be at Reno next year, if there's a Reno next year. I've actually got fabric swatches from both planes mounted in a plaque I bought on eBay.

Cook Cleland's '47 winner's trophy plaque that he won with Race 74 was actually on eBay a little over a week ago. I got outbid, but it was still cool to see it, and hear the seller's story of how his friend Cook pulled it off the wall of the bar in Pensacola and gave it to him.
