I just found a couple pictures of it online. It was actually a captured German project called DFS 346 and the pilot laid prone like the NORTHROP experimental fighter, two stacked single chambered engines, I just entered Soviet rocket plane and it popped right up. BTW, the X-1 sequence at the end of the film was the last time X-1 2062 ("Glamorus Glennis") actually flew. (opps, will I get sued for using the GG name? :lol:

) Chuck Yeager was at the controls and it was flown just for the film cameras. All flying shots for the X-1 sequence with the "Soviet" aircraft in formation with it, were shot on that one drop. It took a lot of planning to make sure they got all the footage they needed and they had to have a camera crew on the ground to capture the one X-1 landing too!

Can't seem to find any information on test pilot Wolfgang Zeise who flew the DFS-346. A German who "volunteered" his services to the Soviets to test the aircraft.

Looking @ the DFS you can almost see that it could have morphed into the AS-5 KELT standoff missle carried under some Tu-95's.

You're probably thinking of the German designed DFS 346. I don't think the USSR ever copied the X-1.

The design of the DFS was captured by the Russians and was flown several times as either a glider or under power, if you GOOGLE DFS 346 under 'images' you will find several typically Soviet style photos of the aircraft, including several pictures of one under the right wing of a Tu-4 BULL, and since it was inside the same time frame as the X-1 it sort of IS the X-1ski.

If you are wondering about the reference to Tony LeVier, there was a photo posted and rescinded, showing a roomful of important aviation types from the period in a studio viewing room watching a screening of 'Jet Pilot' but from the looks on their faces, they all look like they'd just seen 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' and were about to enjoy big, steaming mugs of skunk boiled whole served over gypsum biscuits. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM-Good Cracker!
