When I went there the first time, it only had the one building. I especially liked the chapel area/chaplin display overlooking the WWII-Modern side....and, IIRC, I think you could see something from the cafeteria.

The new buildings are great, but it's almost too big now.
I wonder if that building will be the new home to the test and presidential collection?

Yes, the new building is to house the Presidential aircraft, global reach, and spacecraft.

Even without a shuttle I'm not sure there is room for all the test aircraft.

On a $47Million building, well $50k is like .... Nothing..... It would take a 1000 of those gifts to pay for it...

I'm quite certain the folks at the museum foundation would not be saying the same thing.

According to the museum foundation, the new building will be home to a few of the "x" planes. Look for the X-15 and the X-24A to be included in the building. Almost all of the "x" planes, offically referred to by the museum as the Research & Development collection will be staying right where they are now until sometime way in the future when yet another building goes up.

That is what they are saying now, but I look for that to change. They need that building that currently holds the R&D and Presidential collections to house the restoration of the C-99. I think we will see the X aircraft displayed in the new building.

I'm sure if the people at the Museum Foundation can do math they'd agree with me.....

Gee, I wish someone would give me $50K for something and have it not mean anything.

Good for them. Every bit counts. The museum has grown at an incredible rate since my first visit, which was when the Cold War Gallery and Missile Silo were under construction. They've come a long way in a short amount of time. It will be interesting to see what the plans for the new building are and what ends up being displayed there.

Wow..you are a kid! When I first visited the museum in 1978 they just had one building, and no IMAX theater. Most of the missiles were lined up outside, and a good part of the collection was outdoors as well. Back then, you could actually walk over to the Annex..no security briefing or passes or anything.
