Here we go again! Apparently the gummint is taking a very hard look at doing away with the Thunderbirds, Blue Angels, and every other form of funded sports type advertising like NASCAR and NHRA racing teams-

Not to start a war, but back in my father and grandfather's day, they didn't need to have a program to have fun. They'd have pickup games of sports, etc... and there's always little league that could be expanded to high school.
And much as I hate to say it, we all need to learn to live within our means, including the government. If that means the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels have to go, then so be it. I just hope a lot of other MORE frivolous things and welfare get axed first...

How about "axing" Afganistan and Iraq, bring the troops home and spend the money on REAL problems like THE GREAT DEPRESSION PART II???? I hope you aren't one of those people that blow their SS cheques on Casino Bingo and drive a gas guzzling land yacht with a bumper sticker that says "We're spending our children's inheritance". BTW, SS is just welfare under another name.....

And I am NOT a Republican... Haven't voted for a Republican candidate for president in 4 elections... seriously! And I agree with you about bringing the troops home. If we are going to avoid a "great depression" it will take fiscal responsibility everywhere. Just bringing the troops home will not be enough, because people will still insist that we pay their military paychecks (which I do not begrudge them)... which still means taking tax dollars from you and me. The savings will be in fuel and equipment costs, that's probably about it.

Ryan, I agree that tax dollars must be saved, however taking from the most vulnerable is not the solution. Look at all the money that went to the corporate bailouts. The economy is still in the toilet. How about taking that money and making it easy for people to start up a business? There is enough money around to make "welfare" unecessary if it were used with due diligence. When Bush took the speculation controls off of oil, that's when the price went nuts. AA filed for bankruptcy, I'm am willing to bet fuel prices were a factor. The Gulf war, is it because Saddam Hussain was so corrupt? Hell no, it was because of OIL. There were no weapons of mass destruction.

You are correct that fiscal responsibility is badly needed. However, that being said, not ALL foreclosures are because people bought more than they could afford. A lot of them are collateral damage as a result of that (job loss, portfolio losses, etc). Certainly having people living in tent cities a la Grapes of Wrath isn't going to fix anything.

I promise I won't sent the 99% to occupy your front lawn.

Any bureaucracy that is faced with budget cuts starts defending its turf by creating the most painful list of "proposed cuts" imaginable. For local governments, they usually start by listing the parks, fire stations, and beat officers they will have to cut. They don't talk about cutting expenses by reducing the fleet of vehicles, initiating a hiring freeze for "paper pushers", eliminating overtime, etc. because the public would appreciate those cuts.

Because of the high profile of the threatened services, people get in an uproar and (often) most of the budget is restored.

That's what's happening with the Blues, T-Birds, etc.

Absolutely! That's why, no matter how loud they cry, I NEVER vote for an increase in taxes to support those alleged "sacred cows". Why? Because once they get their money, it doesn't go to support the "sacred cows". There is no transparency or accountability. Here in WA, the Tacoma School District got wise and sued for the tax money levied to support the school system that they (Tacoma Schools) never got. Unfortunately, the first programs that get axed is the ones for the most vulnerable because the most vulnerable have no leverage or influence.

Replied via PM. I want to try and stay within the rules and not get political. My comment was on the idea of living within one's means, and not expecting funding for every little pet project. We need to pare down and get back to basics if we are to survive this as a nation. I fear that my peers do not understand this.

My favorite is the special purpose tax at my home in georgia the "SPLOST" that is supposed to go towards education.... then they build a HUGE high school football stadium, every high school has one. These things cost tens of millions per stadium....
Then there are still constantly kids coming by knocking on the door selling "fund raisers" - Junk that is worthless that I'm supposed to buy to support the football team, the band, the swim team, the wrestlers, etc etc etc it never stops.
I said I would donate to the student engineering society... I get blank looks, because there is no such thing or even anything comparable.
Instead of screaming about what the other guy's political party is doing maybe people should look in their own back yards and realize that they and their children have no real job skills and get busy doing something to solve that problem.

I have been saying for years that a person should be able to graduate HS with marketable skills that will earn a living wage. I never understood why someone should have to spend 12 years studying the same old stuff, just in more detail each year. And when you are done studying this stuff, it is totally worthless in real life (with the exception, of course of being able to read, etc). Unfortunately, a vast majority of college degrees (with some exceptions for certain majors) have been so devalued to the point of making an education a poor investment. Why spend $50,000 for a college education only to be able to earn $10/hr when you get out? You'd be better off putting that $50,000 towards a roof over your head and still get the $10/hr job. This whole country needs to make a major paradigm shift and establish priorities if we are ever going to solve this mess.
