Brigadier General Francis Mulcahy ACSI

Fri Nov 18, 2011 6:36 am

I have a reference to an RNZAF flight made from Guadalcanal in March 1943 with a Brigadier General Frances Patrick Mulcahy, USMC, aboard. It refers to him as the Chief of Staff of the ACSI.

Does anyone have any idea what ACSI stood for please? Thanks.

ACSI, Air(forces) Commander Solomon Islands? Fits his job description at the time...

I reckon that name's most likely where this came from.

That's the first thing that hit my mind when I saw the title of this thread.

Thanks Airnutz, I wondered about that being a likely scenario too, but can anyone confirm of ACSI really does stand for Air Commander Solomon Islands?

Or perhaps more likely his title was Chief of Staff of the Air Command Solomon Islands?

I saw several renditions reflecting that title, or the equivalent, on the web, but I don't have anything on the bookshelf to refer to. Looking forward to what you find, Dave.

According to his obit for Arlington Cemetery, Chief of Staff to the Commander, Air Forces, Solomon Islands, (edit)but then there is the other title in the second sentence beginning the bio.

I've also seen him noted as,ComAirSols, Commander Air Solomons and variants. More reference needed, I reckon...

Francis P. Mulcahy? Wasn't that Father Muclahy's name on M*A*S*H? I never knew about this Marine Corps General. Very interesting, learn something new everyday.

Thanks again Airnutz, I think that pretty much clears up what the initials stood for. Cheers.

Chappie, the padre in M*A*S*H was Fatehr Francis John Patrick Mulcahy. Don't worry, I found many references to him while trying to discover the details of the Brigadier General.

I have found another reference to Mulcahy in some official RNZAF documentation and his title is described as "Chief of Staff to the Air Commander, Solomons". So I guess as Solomons is an abbreviation of Solomon Islands, this explains the ACSI complete, and is as we suspected. Thanks guys.
