“Piyautaili”…Inuit…roughly translating to “Defend unto death”.
The Squadron motto adopted for the 418 “City of Edmonton” Squadron crest in 1946.
A quick look at the history of 418 Squadron shows that from its creation in 1941 as an intruder squadron through missions ranging from being “Guardians of the North” to Search and Rescue through to it’s disbanding in the 1990s the personnel of have honoured the motto and in the service of our country been prepared to “Defend unto death”.
From recognized heroes such as Edmontonian “Russ Bannock” and others during the Second World War to everyday heroes of the Cold War and beyond the personnel of 418 “City of Edmonton” Squadron have created traditions and history that all Edmontonians, Albertans and Canadians can be proud of.
In honour of the 70th Anniversary of 418 “City of Edmonton” Squadron the Alberta Aviation Museum is proud to honour it’s partner, 418 Squadron, Saturday September 3rd at 1pm with the “Roll out” ceremony of our North American B 25 Mitchell Bomber restored to be representative of the 418 Squadron aircraft flown from the hangar that is now home to the Alberta Aviation Museum.
While the major celebrations were held September 3rd with the roll out of the Alberta Aviation Museum’s B-25 Bomber, restored in co operation with 418 City of Edmonton Squadron Association, in 418 Squadron colours and livery the Alberta Aviation Museum is taking a moment today to recognize it’s partner and remember all 418 Squadron has done for Canada, both in combat and humanitarian missions.
“Piyautaili” seems fitting for the service, dedication and courage shown by the members of 418 “City of Edmonton” Squadron.
