rcaf & usaf c-130's called to find missing lake erie boater

a rare but unfortunate sighting occured on friday october 21st when 2 c-130 hercules were on a search mission for a missing boater who's boat was anchored off lakewood ohio. it had obviously been their a day or 2 because there were gale forced winds & the lake erie waves were topping 14 feet, & nobody would be fool enough to go out in those conditions. u.s. coast guard boats from as far as marblehead, sandusky, & cleveland ohio were dispatched to the rescue but could not get close enough to the boat safely. 2 c-130 hercules were dispatched for an air search for the missing boater as helicopter operations were not feasible with the winds. 1 c-130 came all the way from elizabeth city, north carolina!! the other which is quite rare came from trenton, ontario canada courtesy of the royal canadian air force. a canadian rescue team parachuted to the boat , but to know avail or luck. sadly the search for the victim was called off the same day. a c- 130 from lahm air national guard base in mansfield, ohio could have been up to the lake in a matter of a 1/2 hour, but i guess 1 wasn't available as they are training to deploy to afghanistan. many thanks to the rcaf for their kind effort.

It's more an issue of jurisdiction. The US Coast Guard has sole jurisdiction over domestic water search & rescue. As they have HC-130's those are what you saw, not US Air Force. Also, the other thing is that the ANG requires different requesting procedures to be able to get them. The time it would have taken to get a crew together, prep a bird, and get it in the air was probably about the same as the time it took for the HC-130 to fly over from New Jersey.

I believe Mansfield has converted to the C-27J (which could search just as well as a C-130) but I don't know how many airframes they have or what their status is.

Actually, I would love it if someone would start a C-27 thread on WIX. Not a Herk, but I think there will be some interesting stories to tell.

hi capflyer, i'm a little skeptical about those 130's being coast guard as they were not in traditional coast guard high visibility orange & white, they were pale green, also this is what the news media reported.

Yep, green is Canadian. The reason I said USCG is your post said a Herk came from Elizabeth City, that's the USCG's primary Herk base in the NE, not USAF. The closest USAF rescue birds are the HC-130P's and N's of the 106 RQW at Gabreski Airport in New York.

RAAF has asked for FMS price and delivery schedule for ten C-27J's that are replacements for the Caribous that went out of service a couple of years ago.... :drink3:

Actually the Canadian Hercs are two tone grey. They routinely fly into Hamilton for lunch and SAR techs sometime drop in for lunch first before the Herc lands. 424 City of Hamilton Tiger Squadron is based out of Trenton, Ontario.
