The padding that has turned a remarkable rusty shade - anyone know what the original color really was? Was it OD#7 or something similar, or was it a completely different USAAF spec?.
Same question for the seat covers over on the Mary Alice, but this thread is a closer topic.

Author Dana Bell, who has studied WWII US interior colors extensively, says that the padding was originally either dark OD or dyed to match the Dull Dark Green metal parts..it's almost impossible to know for sure. The B-26 Marauder "Flak Bait" has the same padding inside, and it too has faded to a rusty-brown color.

I didn't realize until this thread...and looking at the SSB book again...that the B-17 interior had different colors by section.

I believe some of the original cockpit padding is still in Sally B, but it's still green and the aeroplane spends half of its life outside.
It does also appear to have some modern similar patterned equivalent, but although it's a green colour, I don't believe it's the colour that has been mentioned here.

If you are talking about the padding in the cockpit, that is the same color that they sent us to use in the B-17 here.
