Flying Heritage Collection restorations

What is the Flying Heritage Collection restoring these days?

Who knows? Top secret stuff, apparently.

AFAIK, the Me262 is being worked on, plus a couple of P-38s at WestPac.

Is the Fw189 in storage? And how about the B-17E?

Didn't FHC also acquire the FW189? I'd love to hear how that is progressing.

I had totally forgotten about the Me 262. Thats the one from Planes of Fame, right? Where is it being worked on?

They have a P-38 under restoration at Westpac, and an FG-1D Corsair (formerly owned by Ed Shipley). Their Mosquito project recently arrived at Avspecs. Somewhere out there, with different levels of activity or non-activity involved with them, there is an Me 262A-1a (the example one-time owned by Howard Hughes, and later at the Planes of Fame museum), an IL-2M-3 Shturmovik, a Yak-3U, a Casa 2.111D (He 111H), an Fw 189, and a B-17E, amongst others, or so has been stated in various news articles/forums. Besides their two-seat Zero, it seems as if they own one or two others as well - A6M5 1303, and A6M5 4400.

Thanks for that update. All those airframes will look very nice together one day in their museum.

FW-189? Is that the twin-engined, twin-boomed recon aircraft?

I'm surprised to hear about an IL-2. Did not know there were many of those out there.

Chappie, I'm personally a bit interested in trying to trace down this reported IL-2. It has made it into the list of aircraft owned by Vulcan Warbirds/FHC, as provided by several news articles on the museum, with all of the other aircraft mentioned within the list being rather well documented/known about already. I don't know if it is the same one or two stories repeated, but it seems like there has been at least a few IL-2 related recoveries within the last few years, and there was also some talk, as far as I can recall, about an IL-2 under restoration to flying condition in Russia.

With rather big airframes in this mix, even with the completion of the P-38, I wonder if there have been plans to expand the current FHC facility at Paine Field, or if they will eventually have to institute a program to rotate certain aircraft in and out of public display. Although I have yet to make it out there, it seems just based on photos from the current facility, that space is at an all-time premium with the addition of the B-25 this year (and Fw 190A-5).

I'd be interested to see what you find. I too remember reading about an IL-2 resto in Russia, but I thought it would be to static.

The Fw189 is in storage though when I spoke to FHC last it was currently about 4th on the restoration waiting list. Not sure that is 4th in current restorations or 4th of those stored?!

Would love to say more about some of the others - sure some other stories might be announced this month! :wink:

A reconstructed Jumo 004, WOW!. The ones that I have seen , including the ones at Kbely in Czech Republic had a
a lawn motor type starting engine that had a pull starter rope at the intake. Are they using this or going electric
starter motor? Either way WOW.

Seems a bit odd that they plan to fly the 262 but have deemed the 190D to be too rare to risk. How awesome would it be to see the two of them in the air together?!!!

Well, considering that there are more ME-262 survivors than D model Focke Wulf's and that the FHC model is the only D-13 left, I would say it is not a hard decision to make.
