It's a sex thing!
I'm sorry couldn't resist.
CAPTOR is a encapsulated torpedo. It's an air dropped mine used outside ports or in enemy shipping lanes. It picks up an approaching ship magnetically, acoustically or by other means and launches a MK-46 torpedo at the target. Carried mostly by P-3s but also by B-52s and a few others.

Jack,
I think the S-3 carried them also, If I'm thinking of the right weapon. I'll did up a picture of an S-3B with 2 hung on the pylons (they we're a bit big from what I recall)

Aren't those the ones that can target specific acoustic signatures?

I just saw a video of a C-17 dropping a huge missle out of the back. Some new kind of satellite launch vehicle I suppose.

Newer versions are specially for subs and are laid in deep water. They are moored and can float off the bottom at varying depths while waiting for a sewer pipe to go by.

Here is the picture I have, I have it marked as a Mk-60 mine. I remember looking it up in our manuals in ths shop but that doesn't mean its 100% correct, I write this without the picture in front of me or the notes on the back.
