2-3 hrs west, depending on where you are and traffic, there is Ezell Aviation.
Unfortunately the Tigercat will be gone to the races so you wont see it.

Good call, I'll be driving there from Califailure so I'll see if that's along the route.

Beer-can-ridge is only 30 miles or so north of I-20 if you are taking that route!

This is starting to get good

Route we have so far is take the 40, then the 84 to Fort Sumner, then Clovis, Lubbock, down the Sweetwater & then the 20, but I could hang a left at Snyder onto the 180 & then go thru Roby/Anson/Albany etc to Breckenridge...

I'm in LA, cousin from the UK arrives Sunday & after he goes to SF to see some gal for a few days we're heading to Weatherford to see another cousin who has lived in Tx for about 40 years.

& the best part: Rental Ford Mustang.... BWUHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I was just gonna say hang a left at Snyder

Last time I drove that far I did LA to OKC in about 21 hours, so if we get out of LA by lunch time on Tuesday we would be in Breckenridge for breakfast on Wednesday... that's if I'm driving, cuz wants to "see stuff" along the way & take his time. I figure we can take out time getting back to LA afterwards & he can *see stuff* then...

I grew up in Snyder and have driven to Breckenridge at least 500 times on that same road. There is generally at least one or two Highway patrol on 180 between Snyder and Roby and often one between Anson and Albany when heading to Breckenridge. Watch out for them because they are not forgiving!! There isn't a lot of difference time wise, going down 84 or I-20 but the 84 route is more scenic. Although with the drought, everything is either dried up or burned down!

If you are in Lubbock, there is the Silent Wings Glider museum. On Hwy 84 down to Snyder you will pass through Slaton Texas. That is home to Malcom Laing and the Texas Air Museum. They've got quite a bit of cool stuff. The F-101 and F-105 that Gary Austin was fooling with are behind the fence at the airport in Snyder. You can't really see them from the road too well and the gate code had changed when I was there a couple of weeks back.

If you're taking I-20, as you approach Abilene, look to your right (south) and yu'll have a nice view of Dyess, you'll see lots of C-130s and a B-1 or two in the pattern.
If you find the base, there will be a Lancer and Herk at the front gate along with a replica of Col. Dyess' P-40. The base elementary school is just off base just to the East has a F-4 out front.
I don't know if they'll let you on to see the airpark...you can ask at the main gate..

There is nothing to see at Abilene regional, but if just norh of I-20 is Elmdale airpark, home to the CAF Big Country squadron...BT-13, Twin Beech, L-Birds...

Further west, you'll go by Big Spring, there is a museum at thwe old Webb AFB...and IIRC, a Huey & Cobra at a Vietnam memorial nearby.

Also, there is a Huey and T-33 at the park in Sweetwater (also on I-20) by the high school in the north part of town.

From Albuquerque, you can take NM-41 South @ Moriarty, until hitting US-60, then head EAST. It is a road without much traffic; a high desert road, lots of wildlife to see, few houses here and there. REMEMBER to fill up your gas tank before you exit I-40 anywhere. Just in case, some gas stations South of I-40, close early evening.

You could also follow US-285 SOUTH @ Clines Corners (exit 218) to encino, then US-285 / US-60 EAST.

And, of course, the route you have already mentioned, US-84 South to Fort Sumner [Say hi to Billy the Kid] and thence to Clovis:

F-100 in Melrose, NM on the north side of US-60, in town, right across from the Melrose Municipal School.

There is an F-111 in Clovis in front of Sneed Auto shop (on US-60 EAST, the address for the shop is 3400 West 7th St.)

A C-47 and several gliders [WACO and others] at the Silent Wings Museum, in Lubbock, TX [5401 N Martin Luther King Blvd, Lubbock, TX 79403-9714] This museum is NORTH of Lubbock. Take I-27 / US-87 to the Lubbock International Airport.
