This past weekend Hot Stuff participated in the Wings Over Waukesha airshow, just west of Milwaukee. I'll post some info on that as soon as I can get to it-

There we were, searching the vast, trackless expanse of the ocean for an ellusive periscope or telltale wake...

Okay, maybe we weren't out to sea... but we had a great time participating in the Wings Over Waukesha airshow this past weekend. That's Scott piloting Hot Stuff past Chicago on the way to the show,

I got the some time in each seat,

and here's Gaylon bringing us back home.

We had a lot of foot traffic all weekend, with the line generally out past the wingtip. The folks were great, the support from the airshow staff was superb, and the weather was perfect. Sandy did her usual calm and competent job of running the PX and pasing out her baked-from-scratch cookies, with the rest of the crew cycling through the various tour guide roles. Our new guy Spencer was continuously busy, either working with the public inside the plane, or in front of it, or wiping oil, or loading or unloading the plane... basically being about as usefull as one guy can be. The show itself was well attended and went off without any major hitches. All in all, and given this was the first airshow at Waukesha in several decades, it was pretty impressive.

We got to chase the YAF B-25 around the airshow pattern both days, with a TBM chasing us on Sunday. Each day several people commented on how good the old girl looked and sounded in flight. We also had the good fortune to bump into some of the YAF folks Saturday night at a restaurant, which resulted in an awful lot of laughter and the promise that several of the amused locals would come out to the show the next day.

Image
Friday night saw us enjoying a very nice dinner in a corporate hangar, complete with acoustic guitar and vocals provided by a very talented young lady, as well as a couple skits put on by a charity group called the "Pinup Girls"'.

Image
One of my brothers was kind enough to stop by and volunteer to help out. He spent most of the day staffing the door during tours, answering questions and handing buttons out to the kids. When it was time to go fly, he got introduced to the sweatier side of big engined airplanes...

Happy tails to you- (with appologies to Gene Autry or Roy Rogers, or whoever...)

Sorry for the brevity, but time is still at a premium here. This was great outing for our little troupe, and we look forward to more in the future. Stay tuned!

To the "Hot Stuff" crew,

On behalf of Wings Over Waukesha, I'd like to reiterate a big "thank you" for a great job flying the show profile, the all-day ground tours and great hospitality you showed the folks attending the show--lots of buzz and great comments all weekend about the Harpoon and hard-chargin' crew. Heck, I even ran into my old elementary school principal for the first time in 31 years and I learned he was an engineer/gunner on P2V Neptunes and remembers seeing some of the last Navy Harpoons flying during his service. He really loved seeing "Hot Stuff". We're already moving ahead with the show for next year (Aug 25-26, 2012) and would love to have you guys back. I'll be the coordinator for warbirds and headline performers again so keep in touch as your 2012 schedule starts taking shape.

Hi Pat,
We have some folks working on a new site and hope to have it up and running soon. I believe the domain for the previous one expired. When the new one is operational we will post the new address for it.
Thanks for asking.

Our website got hijacked and corrupted. Getting that sortted out has been challenging, but we anticipate this will be resolved shortly. Thanks for your interest!

I was at thunder over michigan and anticipated taking a flight experience on Hot Stuff, as the brochure listed several offering flights. The weather was a factor in Hot Stuff arriving late and I didn't see it fly Sat. It was static allowing tours and I questioned if it would indeed be offering flights at a later date and was told the FAA was giving them a hard time and has to be worked out. With their website being corrupted and not knowing how to contact them as I can't find a phone number. A co-worker has been to the Indy area and Mt. Comfort airport 3-4 times , on weekends and couldn't find anybody there to talk to. Maybe just bad timing on his part but I would sure like to have a way to contact them to see whats up and their show schedule.

Hi there-

Well, for starters, and until the new website is up, this is as good a way as any to reach us. As I understand it, we will be back on line very shortly. I think you will like the results!

Next, the FAA isn't giving Hot Stuff a hard time, they have issued a moratorium for new ride programs. My personal experience with das fed has been positive... and sometimes downright helpful.

I can't tell you why YIP advertized us as offering historic flight experiences. It was not a topic of discussion between us, as far as I know. That sounds like a clerical error.

As far as visiting our facility goes, we have historically had work parties on Wednesdays and Saturdays. However, given we are a small, all-volunteer group, the realities of our day jobs can impact work schedules significantly. It is always best to give us a holler prior to heading to the airport.

Thanks for the interest in our bit of history and our efforts, and do stay in touch!

Greetings from Delhi, WIXers. It's been a while since I posted anything, but not because nothing's been going on. Au contraire...

As the annual D check was winding up and the weather was delightful, I had told Gaylon to get his butt out there and clean up some of the mess he'd made while working on the right engine. He whined so much about the plane being in the way that John went out to help...

Image

We got the plane done in time for our first gig, the Wings over Whiteman airshow, with the assistance of most of the membership. However, Gaylon and Rich by far and away put in the greatest number of hours, and it's through their tireless and often thankless efforts that the job got done, and done right. I just can't tell you how wonderfully those big radials run, how proud I am of this little troupe, and how grateful we all are for the patient spouses.

Here's all the guys enroute to Whiteman. The gals were in back, snoozing comfortably. Not a concept I'll ever quite grasp, but I guess I don't have to.

Image

The trip out was pretty effortless, and Whiteman gave us a straight in visual to the south. Naturally, we only needed a fraction of the cold war era heavy bomber runway, and taxied quite a ways down before exiting to the display ramp. We were immediately welcomed and had the aircraft and aircrew fluids serviced. Life is good!

After the plane was secured, we headed to a hangar for the welcome dinner. We met a few friends from hither and yon and made some new ones as well. We headed to the hotel prior to the evening pre-show airshow, as some of the troops were tuckered out.

The next day was hot and windy, but we had a pretty steady stream of traffic at the plane. We took turns, rotating through the different roles needed for our display and alternately wandering the grounds looking at all the goodies. Gary and his son stopped by for a visit, and it was good to catch up a bit.

Here Spencer is providing a little education for some interested attendees.

Image

Here we have a different angle on most of the crew interacting with the public.

Image

The show went well for all involved, but due to rapidly changing weather enroute we holed up for the night in Illinois. Although none of us were especially thrilled with this, the plane and crew were not hazarded in any way, and it's the only time I'm aware of the organization getting stuck out in many years. Had we been in the flight levels and equipped with radar it would have been one thing, but in unpressurized territory and equipped with Mark I eyeballs, prudence dictated we sit that one out.

Image

It's ironic that the skies were so beautiful at Quincy and yet thirty miles to the east was a pretty solid wall of water, especially given how parched the Quincy area has been lately.

Next day, well rested and ready to go, we made our way back to the Indy area. The old girl ran great, the show was a success, and all in all we had a good first showing for the year.

I just joined WIX, and I have been reading through quite a few of the threads. I have enjoyed this one quite extensively for a couple of reasons. First I'm from Indiana, so HS is kinda a local lady for me. Second Not only am I from Indiana, but I'm from Rushville. I grew up going to the Airshow at Mt. Comfort. It seems that this post and any new HS info has kinda dried up.

What's new the Hot Stuff? I would love to come see her some time.
