One Man's Passion: Scrap Metal Airplanes

Sun Aug 07, 2011 6:36 pm

Here's an article about a guy who builds full size replica airplanes as his hobby. Him and his wife run a bed and breakfast in Ontario. He's got a Fokker DR1, a Sopwith Camel, and Supermarine Spitfire, and at the moment he's working on a Messerschmitt ME109.

Here's the article:

Here's his B&B's website with more pictures:

Perhaps this more belongs in the modellers section, and if so deemed, mods please move it.

Peace,

David M

Neat hobby. A lot more eye catching than a cement white-tailed deer. That Dr-1 prop looks a bit too high tech though!

Having met the man I can say he is certainly an interesting fellow. One thing the article doesn't mention is his prerequisite to put at least one Model A part in each airplane (I think it's always been a wheel so far). You can see the engine of his Dr.I is built up around a spoked wheel, as is the spinner of his Spitfire, IIRC.

Neat stuff and I know I would never have thought to head on down to the Home Depot to buy Messerschmitt parts...
