Does anyone know what type of plane Gardner shot down on 10 June? Was he flying this same aircraft and did it have the pin-up then yet? At that time the tail would probably still have had the stripes on the tail.

I too am totally in favour of some more PTO-marked Mustangs on the warbird scene.
The first Mustang I ever saw, and remembered (I might have seen some as a small kid), and also the first airplane I ever photographed, was the French machine that played in the Empire of the Sun movie. Needless to say it looked stunning with the lighning bolt on the side.

The new publication on the 506th Group only shows the lettering but nothing else. Would love to get hold of a copy of a pic showing the detail of that Varga girl. The detail of the port side is well shown in the book.

FWIW, the 457th is still alive and well today. I used to be an F-16 Crew Chief in that squadron. It's a USAF Reserve squadron attached to the 301st Fighter Wing based at NAS Fort Worth JRB. Great group of guys. Many of the pilots are American Airlines pilots and they were flying Operation Southern Watch on 9/11 out of Kuwait. They immediately shifted missions and began attacking targets in Afghanistan. Can't imagine what it was like being an AA pilot sitting in the cockpit of an F-16 over Afghanistan in the days immediately following 9/11. The best comradarie between pilots and maintainers that I ever saw in all my time in the USAF.
