POF High Country Fly-In Valle AZ, anybody go?

Sun Jun 26, 2011 12:46 am

Happened to be in the neighborhood and went with my girlfriend; my first time at any POF event or any US airshow for that matter. Amazing event, never seen active warbirds that up-close and personal (or low....). Collected on a past-due birthday gift from my gf and got a 40 minute ride in Spam Can, Mark Moody piloting. Holy crap is all I can say. Hanging in the straps your first time in a real warbird opens your eyes real quick.

A really great show, great flying all day from 23Skidoo Spam Can Wee Willy Photo Fanny plus a T-28 and a few others, no music, no announcers/commentators/p.a. system of any kind, and minimal crowds; if this is the best kept secret in the warbird world then sorry I mentioned it, but it was awesome. Oh and the museum itself is also fantastic, we went through it a few days prior, I could have easily spent another day. Everyone representing the POF were a pleasure to deal with, and it's strengthened my resolve to get to Chino someday sooner than later.

P.S. if I had any gold fillings I would have sucked them out for a ride in the P-38....

Sorry about the lack of pics, I'm still on the road but will post a few when I get home. I've only got a basic digital point & shoot so nothing great, and the few air-to-air shots I tried to get are pathetic. Definitely makes me appreciate what the pros do. I do have a couple cool videos, including the P-51's rolling in to their parking spots and doing a nice tidy spin after cutting the engine...cool to see from 20' away!

Cheers

I visited the museum back in 2010 and all I will say is it was a great experience. The staff is very friendly, the aircraft and displays are interesting as well. Well worth the trip if you near the Grand Canyon.
