Thanks Doug. I am not familiar as much with 9th AF markings, but for me at least, that type screams "computer generated". I know you said it was for size and placement only, but I really feel it should be a lettering style comparable to others in the FG, if not the 401st FS. I would rather see no nose art than modern lettering personally. If you are interested, I can help with that. Send me an email, and I can show you what I am doing with the CAF. chad@hotrodchassisandcycle.com

It is computer generated in vinyl to match his P38. This is done for testing. When we have the final placement and size, it will be painted. Here is his P38 that we copied it from. Looks pretty close.

This was "the Brat" he was shot down and rescued then got another P38 "The Brat II". The Mustang became "The Brat III"

Close yes, but still not the same. It needs to be drawn by hand (meaning manually on the computer in my case) by someone who understands typography and period lettering. You can always tell me to pound sand...

I did this quickly for reference. I would want to spend some time with the letterforms to make sure they look correct, but you will get the gist...

vs whatever font is close on the computer. Granted, there would be some variation from "II" to "III", even with the same artist. But if all you have to go on is the P-38 photo, then I would base it on that style of lettering, not what the sign shop offers.

Chad Ezell is the "sign shop". If you can make a stencil to trace and then we can hand paint it in. The problem is that we will need to etch the metal with the stencil to get the paint to stick the best, then hand paint over the etch. During the war, they didn't worry how long it would stick. And the metal wasn't so polished.
