They had painted cowling to denote different sections in the squadron. I think they also called them flights. I seem to recall reading about up to four colors on the cowling in some squadrons.

I've often wondered why someone re doing a STEARMAN hasn't done one in 'RECALL' markings, talk about get everyones attention in the pattern and you wouldn't have to tell the guy in the fuel truck 'it's blue with yellow wings'
Now, that would be an interesting subject against a foul looking skyscape_

I recall (pardon the pun) seeing a photo of one in yellow/black diagonal stripes.

Well it sounds like I could include at least one other aircraft and have a mix of cowl colours which I like the idea of.

Ok, I've made the decision to have two ships in the painting, both banking away slightly, with the lead ship piloted by Jimmy Stewart having coloured cowls (what colour is yet to be decided), and the one to his rear and port side with silver cowls.

Any further information anyone can shed on this would be greatly appreciated. The canvas has been blocked in and I'll post a picture of it soon if people are interested in seeing the progress.

Who has Stewart's log books?
It would be nice to see what planes he flew...and I'm sure some of the B-24s were captured in photos.

Also, and of Stewart's private planes out there?
He had a Stinson 105 pre-war and according to 1975 program for Harvey I attended in London's West End, it mentioned that he had and flew a Super Cub.

Well here are the first two shots of this large (30" X 40") canvas. Still very much in the early stages, the landscape WILL change a lot before I'm happy to work the aircraft in. It needs to get lighter for a start and there's cloud and land detail to add.

These are the initial energetic marks having worked out where I want to place the horizon in chalk.

That's it. I mis- remembered it as being checkerboard, in any case, if you as a dumb primary student were up wasting gasoline and chasing hawks, that would get your attention to get back on the ground NOW!!

JDK, nice couple of picture links there,. thanks. I do love that 'hazard' paint scheme...I'll keep that on the back burner for a future project. I should imagine this painting will total around 60hrs by the time it's done, so we'll see what happens after that.
