Looking up aircraft records

Is there one site that is better than the others. For example, I am trying to find out the history on the aircraft in the Grissom collection. Detailed history on which units they flew in and any photos I can come across. For example the C-119 52-5850 c/n11009. Thanks in advance

I can help with histories of aircraft that were still active with the USAF during the 60's and early 70's and USN/USMC aircraft up to 1985.

The first record I have of C-119G 52-5850 is when it reurned from overhaul with Fairchild at St. Augustine to 932TCM Group at Scott AFB on the 7th of May 1964. Then to 934TCM Group at Minneapolis St Paul, 27 Jan 1967. Became 934TAL Group 1 Sep 1967. To 933TAL Group at Gen Billy Mitchell on 30 Jan 1970 then to 928TAL Group at Chicago O'Hare on 25 March 1970. Probably SOC in 1971 but I am missing that years data.

That is exactly what we are looking for. I am trying to do that for each aircraft. If you don't mind I will send you the tail numbers in question.

No much help with actual data sometimes....but it's fun to look around.

I;m still trying google on some of them, but these are great! I also found out that our F-105 was named "Balls 88"

Why don't you just ask the Air Force? The Air Force Historical Research Agency maintains the records of virtually all the aircraft ever used by the USAF. They will send you a summary of units and dates for all of those aircraft.

Any military airplane with 00 at the front of the serial number is called "Balls whatever the next two numbers are".
