All,

Met Mr McKenna last week at the MCAA Reunion here in San Diego. One surefire way to get the best CGI would be to have TBD/SBD/S2U and other aircraft drawings for their modelers to use. He has my card. He may contact me.

You might already know about the really good book about Torpedo 8:

A great read.

+1 -- If there was a Naval Aviation book that deserved the "Band of Brothers" treatment, this one would be it. I don't think I've read a book that brings the human element to the story of Torpedo 8 as this one did.

Mrazek has another book out right now on the Stuttgart Raid, where 45 B-17s were lost. If it's anything like "A Dawn Like Thunder", it's probably a great read, too. I've been meaning to check it out.

While Mrazek's depiction of Swede Larsen may not be the best, he does give Swede a bit of vindication towards the end of the book...Swede's respect for Aaron Katz, for example, and Mrazek does say that Larsen did mellow as he got older.

To me, the harshest treatment in the book was reserved for Air Group 8 CAG Stan Ring.

How can you improve on this casting?

If the Triple X people get involved there will be killer clowns, Aliens, "Lasers", and a terrible love story.

If the BoB guys get it, it might actually be good.

The trick is not making the CGI the star but the story and characters. The CGI planes are just vehicles for the story. Good story trumps all!!!!

And that is why Hollywood sucks so bad lately. One out of about 25 films are even worth your time.

That is my opinion....I might be wrong.

There's no "ifs" (or "xXx") about it .. the writer listed on this project (and mentioned from the very first posting in this thread) is Bruce McKenna. In addition to serving as a writer/producer on "The Pacific," Mr. McKenna's other credits include the scripts for three segments from "Band of Brothers" ("Replacements," "Bastonge," and 'The Last Patrol")

Before anyone "dings" Pensacola's NNAM about cooperation
regarding flying replicas let me remind everyone how the
repo Me-262s came about. The airframe used for the pattern
belongs to the navy and is on display in Pensacola. I would
bet money if one of the larger, more accomplished restoration
shops offered to restore the TBD in exchange for using it as
a pattern, a deal could be struck. I personally would like to
see it done at NNAM so I can watch it happen.

I knew quite a few of those "torpeckers". The nicest thing
I ever heard about Swede Larsen was, "...he commanded
with his rank".

As far as Stanhope Ring goes....sheesh.....

Did I miss something about the NMNA working on recovering a TBD?

Moreover, it was my understanding that all the potentially recoverable TBDs (the one of the Keys, the couple offshore of some remote South Pacific island) would turn to rot if attempts were made to raise them.

Given the foregoing, wouldn't it be easier to start from scratch on building a TBD? That is, track down the drawings and begin anew?

Enlighten me please, as I've always been a huge TBD fan thanks to that only Monogram model from waaaaay back. I love the smell of airplane glue in the morning....

Word was put out a few months back that the NMNA is looking for funding to have A&T raise a TBD off the California coast.

FWIW I really enjoy the movie Midway..it's one of my favorites. Kind of a sequal to Tora, Tora, Tora. But not as good!

Yup. Here's the thread from three months ago (Feb 2011) when the story first appeared on WIX ...

Really? I consider it one of the worst films I have ever sat through. Not only is it poorly written but the acting stinks with b-graders and rotten ham actors who were then considered stars for some reason like that dreadful man Heston. With all the clips taken from other films and sloppily cobbled together I found it hard to follow. The storyline of the Japanese internees was a totally unneccessary, cheesy and annoying sidleine. And comparing it to Tora, Tora, Tora which was a fine dramatic documentary with decent research and writing and acting, it doesn't cut the mustard one bit. I'd rate Tora five stars and Midway wouldn't get half a star.
