A Forum for those interest in vintage NON-military aircraft

Here's what the F-18 looks like, as I can attest, although this photos is from the 2011 Demo Team's website.

And here's what it looked like as I taxied away on departure yesterday.

Anyway, all goals were achieved. I qualified to lead a Heritage Flight display at a 2011 Canadian airshow. And then later that day I demonstrated a sequence for my ACE card as well. This involved flying an aerobatic airshow routine in the P-40 in front of Bud Granley on the ground. He gave me a thumbs up, so now I'm legal to fly aeros in front of an invited crowd.
Interesting week, with a couple of personal firsts.

I know this thread should be more about your Fairchild, and less about the VWC, but you're teasing us with those pictures and I gotta say, what a great looking training weekend you guys had. The CMF out here takes part in a formation flying workshop held in Oliver, BC. Or at least that's where it was last year.
Kudos to the VWC and your efforts to present canada's aviation history and work with the CF on heritage flights. I'd sure like to see you guys set up shop here out west. Until then... lol... I'll keep enjoying the great web articles you send out.
Happy Fairchild flying!
Peace,

Dave, tell us about that Sabre behind the Corsair.

Dave, thanks for the update. Glad everything went good. Can’t wait to see the mixed formations at an airshow.

The Sabre is part of the VWoC collection. It's a MK5/MK6 Canadair Sabre. VWoC aquired it to commemorate the 100th of powered flight. It is painted in Golden Hawks colours to for that reason (the Golden Hawks having been formed to commemorate the 50th).
There's a bit more info and a bunch more pictures of it on the VWoC website.

Here are a few more photos from that day, forwarded to me by Wayne Giles, a Volunteer at Vintage Wings. They are a bit unusual because the airplane is actually in motion; not parked with me standing nearby pressing the shutter button.
Taxi in with the Sabre doing it's run-ups and engine tests before the qualifying flights of the weekend.

Parking on the grass, out of the way.

On departure...

Thanks, Wayne!

Dave, any word on whether you or any of the museum's planes might make it down to Geneseo this year?

Pete,
I'd like to go with the Fairchild, but I'm not certain of getting the time free yet.
As far as I know Vintage Wings has no plans to show in Geneseo, although I don't know if there has been any correspondence or not.

We got the CHT sensor and line replaced. The old stuff was pretty degraded...

Nice new stuff (new old stuff, actually) from nice folks in California...

And it worked! An easy installation, although we were careful to lag the wires to avoid chafe. Steady readings that seemed accurate for the whole flight. It's an important instrument, a CHT, for a radial. It really is the key to gentle warming and cooling of those cylinders.
Went to Edenvale, where more and more pilots are visiting the fine restaurant there.

Then yesterday flew to Gatineau for an aero display practice flight in the P-40. Our new Stearman was flying steady all day, training the new pilots for the "Yellow Wings" program, in which we are taking a formation of these various trainers out to Alberta and back, visiting all the WWII training fields (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan) along the way on the return. Here we are at the run-up point together.

After which I fueled-up and then ferried the P-40 to Hamilton in preparation for the airshow there next weekend. I left it in good company.

Dave, Bernadette and I missed you by one day. We visited the CWH on Thursday. Great to hear the P-40 is in town already.

Had a great day yesterday. Took the Fairchild to Hamilton, flew the P-40 (aero display practice for this weekend's airshow), then returned.
Very sad to hear (when I got to the CWH hangar) that Liberty Belle had force-landed, but all we can do is "Keep Calm and Carry On".

Except for the civilian paint scheme, it doesn't look too out of place.

I wonder if we should ever paint it like this...

An unusual view of a F-24W.

And it all worked well, perhaps surprisingly. The showers stayed scattered all day, the engines all ran, and my little portable radio (Icom) sufficed to get me in and out of the control zone. No snags.

I was wondering if you were able to fly yesterday as the the ceiling looked a bit low, but obviously everything worked out.
It will be great to see you perform an aerobatic display in the P-40. Something you don't see too often at airshows, especially in Canada.

Dave, is that B-25 back there an H model? It looks like it's got a solid gun nose.

It is a B-25J belonging to CWH.
