Static preservation is not a poor alternative to airworthy operation.

Good thing they're not flying. Saves them from modern modifications, wear and tear and possible crashes. There are enough flyers.

WOW! Now that is incredible. Way to go NMoUSAF, hope some of my money went toward that project. What a great service, not only do we have a fantastic public museum with arguably the worlds greatest collection of aircraft, people who are unable to go see it can come very very close to experiencing it on the internet.

All on this forum who are part of or members of the Museum should be proud of themselves.

they did a great job .. and I have the privilege of spending time there every Friday ...

Yesteday, we had close to 1,000 youngsters for Space Day ... there was a presentation by one of the Astranouts and then they were touring the museum as well ...

just wait till the SEA (Vietnam) gallery is finished ... they recently added some "Misty" exhibits as well as the "River Rats" who will be having their reunion this coming week.

I AGREE - static preservation is not a bad alternative to keeping in a flyable state, especially if there is only one example of a type left. But I disagree that there are enough flyers - there are a lot more post-WWII type military props and jets and civilian propliner aircraft that I would like to see as flyers.

The AF Museum has an outstanding collection and I look forward to my next visit there in a couple of years or so. Thanks for the link.

Dan, I meant that there are enough flyers that the museum doesn't need to fly any. Maybe a 'historic flight' using other airplanes, but it'd be irresponsible to fly any of the museum's exhibits.

So yeah, we can always have more flyers, just not from the museum

Now that's cool! My only wish would be that they had shot the pictures from a higher vantage point. I would love to see the museum install some elevated catwalks like they have an Udvar-Hazy or Pensacola, but of course I realize the the expense would be prohibitive (and there are liablity and accessiblity issues involved as well.)
