Illinois Nazis... (Bf-109F Trop, etc.)

Tue Apr 19, 2011 9:13 pm

Anyone know the modern history of Bf-109F Tropical WERK Nr. 6719 (sort of) on display at the Auto Museum in Volo, Illinois? Where is the rest of it , what condition is it in and who is doing the work?

Also of general interest...

The paper says:

LUFT. PLANE WING SECTION

LARGE SECTION OF A WING FROM AN "FW 190 A7," FLOWN BY OBLT. WERENER STOLL
OF THE 5TH SQUADRON OF THE 26TH FIGHTER GROUP. THIS PLANE WAS SHOT-DOWN
BY A B-17 ON APRIL 13TH, 1944 OVER WEILIGENMUSCHEL, GERMANY.

And then for some strange reason there is an illustration of a Bf-109 signed by Lt. Gottfried Paul Johannes Dulias of JG53 in the same frame.

I believe the current concensus is that "Lt. Gottfried Paul Johannes Dulias of JG53" didn't serve with JG53 or any other fighter group.
http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthrea ... ht=dullias

Off the top of my head; there has been no documentation found to back up his claims, he doesn't exist in surviving Luftwaffe documents, no surviving members of JG53 remember him, his aircraft kill claims don't add up with surviving documenation, he claims shooting down I-16's in 1945, long past any were in combat, and the list goes on.

Regards,
Mike

Mike, I've read through the 12'oclock high thread as well as one on a german militaria forum and I have to say that I was not totally surprised to see that info. I've seen Mr. Dullias at several shows and even spoke to him and bought his book, but in my own opinion something always seemed a little odd/off about his story to me. After I bought his book I googled his name and came up with the same thread you linked to.

For the record, when I spoke to him he was very friendly. I dont want to insult the guy, but some of his story seems like it just does not add up. I dont doubt that he served in the Lutwaffe in some capacity or that he was not captured.

I found a fantastic thesis that someone did disputing many of the claims in his book. It is a very good read I'll see if I can find it and post a link. Here is is: http://members.chello.nl/~s.lepstra/dulias/Dulias.pdf

I didn't know they had any aircraft stuff there.

This must be fairly newish. I was there a few years ago and don't remember it. I do, however, remember cars... lots of beautiful cars.

I suppose I could be convinced to go to Volo again sometime soon. If I make it up there I'll see if I can find someone to ask.

I was there on a Thursday afternoon so there weren't many people around to ask.

Shhhh! you are ruining my reason to head that way. I'm seeing no mention of the aircraft on Volo's website. Do you think they might be restoring it? They have a resto department on site. It has apparently changed quite a bit since I was last there.

I can't imagine that they would have the facilities or know how to restore any kind of aircraft.

Is it weird that the sign mentions having the derelict airframe AND log? Also, is there any genuine Bf-109 stuff in that cockpit section or is it just a mock up? It looks too simple to be real.
