Col. Morgan's first tank ride

Thu Apr 21, 2011 7:19 pm

Before 9/11/01 when we had the blessing from the Army we did parades with out M-60 A1. Col. Morgan was the Grand Marshal. He was admiring the tank. As I was talking to him he said: " Son, I've never rode in a tank."

I fixed that for him right away.

That's awesome! I had the good fortune to meet Col. Morgan at one of the now defunct Frederick, Maryland airshows back in the late 1990s. The one thing that struck me about him was his eyes. While his body had aged in the intervening years, when you looked at his eyes, they still had that same gaze you saw in the "Memphis Belle" documentary.

We chatted briefly about "Belle" at that point, and recall he wanted to see her back in Dayton. He also autographed a picture for me, that I have been unable to locate since we moved nearly a decade ago. :(

Very cool photo, thanks for sharing.

Where is that M-60 now?

I had the honor of meeting him as well. He was always very nice, and was a huge advocate of the Belle going to the NMUSAF. Linda Morgan fought very hard to make that happen.

We gave the tank back to the Army. After 9/11 we were no longer able to drive it in parades or sell rides for thw museum. A 100,000 plus paperweight is no fun.

Anyone know how Linda Morgan is doing?
